I don’t see why manhattan called his beliefs stupid in conjunction with closing the thread. Don’t get me wrong, I think he’s an idiot, but if the beliefs of his were, “God exists and had a son named jesus christ etc…” Then I suspect less people would be so quick to jump up and qualify it stupid.

Keeping in mind that the purpose of this board is to fight ignorance:
I think the difference is that the beliefs of mainstream Christians (to use your example) cannot be proved or disproved. For example, how would you go about proving or disproving that Jesus is the son of God? or that there is a heaven? or that there is a soul? Any good Christian will admit this. Indeed, this is the very definition of faith: belief without proof. To believe something that cannot be either proved or disproved isn’t necessarily ignorant.
However, to believe in psychic phenomena (such as clairvoyance) is ignorant, pure and simple, because it can be easily disproved. If KGS can really see the future, then he should go over to James Randi and claim the million bucks. Of course, every time he fails he can claim that something went wrong—that he shouldn’t have taken notes or something—and every time he succeeds it won’t be in a scientifically sound way. It’s ignorant to believe in an ability that must have a foundation in science in order to exist, yet cannot be measured by science.
So, I certainly can’t fault manhattan for calling ignorant beliefs stupid.
Actually, I think a more appropriate tagline for KGS would be “Stupidity is not a religion. It’s a way of life.” Because that’s sure how he seems to be living it.
But is it really appropriate for a Mod to do so? Especially for someone who is supposed to be enforcing the rules (i.e. no insulting in the GQ forum)? Kind of hypocritical don’t you think? I’m not being sarcastic, I’m just curious. Is it okay to insult someone’s ideas in the GQ forum (like you did in the above quote) as long as you are not directly insulting that person? I don’t know. I’d appreciate a little clarification. I am FULLY prepared to discuss my opinions in public. It is the public…at least, this insular cult of a message board, and this forum in particular…that is NOT prepared, to the point where NOT ONE PERSON will take my side. Let me repeat myself – I DO NOT BELIEVE THE MATRIX MOVIE, OR THE MATRIX RELOADED MOVIE, ARE REAL. THEY ARE FICTION. THEY ARE FOR ENTERTAINMENT ONLY. However, I do see very strong parallels in The Matrix (movie) to my own “Matrix Theory”, just like I see parallels in other movies, religions, world events, etc.
I have used the word “Matrix” to describe a specific aspect of my beliefs for a long time, since 1987 at least. I have people who can vouch for that, incluing one who is a registered member of this board.
In any case, it is claer that just mentioning whatever it is I mentioned, is not acceptable here, not because I’m braeking the rules, but because…well, it is not acceptable. I don’t understand why.
