The OP is a bad play on words but I couldn’t help it.
If I had the benefit of 20X20 foresight vision I would have entered the addiction research field at a young age, and tried to pioneer things that are now coming to light. The following OP outlines in my opinion one of the best culmination of addiction studies I have read in recent history. It is full of scientific studies for the most staunch Dopers who scrutinize and evaluate, there are areas for people truly seeking help, and areas for families of addicts… Resource links and credible cites to aid todays addicts. Plenty of statistics and back-up material. As a man who has been affected by addiction on the familial level and on a personal level, I have taken a vested interest in this topic, as anyone who participated in the Addiction is a Disease thread a few weeks ago can see. For now this is what I have found:
I was watching Good Morning America today and they were highlighting several new scientists studying the addiction phenomenon. They are shedding new light on addiction and taking it from a disease model to more of a Brain Disorder. This is a link to the original 4 page article, it highlights a couple addicts and has commentary by several scientists. Mostly from the NIAAA (National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Addiction) and the NIDA (National Institute on Drug Abuse) and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. It was this article that led me to their website where there is a plethora of info.
The good part to all of this, is that they illustrate Scientifically Proven Methodologies for helping addiction, and they show their results and comment on them. They have scientific info on 12-step programs and a plethora of other programs out there.
I’m elated to see Scientifically Proven treatment methods outlined to make them easier to read. I’m happy to see a study of AA that outlines the benefits and disadvantages in an easy to read manner. I’m glad the article lists the BEST programs with the highest success rates, I’m happy to see AA near the top. I’m happy to see topics like, Craving , Why do some people get addicted and others not,, addiction and the brain … and many more.
So…whaddayathink?
