Aw, damn… it’s just a bunch of rocks, but I’m so saddened by this! I spent a lot of family vacations in NH as a kid and spent a lot of time looking at the Old Man. It always reminds me of my aunt and uncle, who are both gone. Sad.
Just another reason to hate weathering!
There it goes–ruining another perfectly good chunk of granite.
damn you WAD, you beat me to it. Sad and funny news…another reminder that nothing’s permanent. I guess the moral is “enjoy it well it lasts”.

This sounds like the work of an evil super villain. I’d be worried that he might strike some of the items shown on the other state quarter dollars, like the tree on the Connecticut coin, the Wright Flyer shown on North Carolina’s (and on Ohio’s – couldn’t come up with an original idea there?), and, not to be alarmist, the whole territory highlighted on the Louisiana quarter.
I just got through reading about it elsewhere. Damn. I grew up going to see that. We used to always go to the Storybook Inn over by North Conway and often would either take a day trip across the Kangamangus or would go home that way just to see the Old Man. And I hadn’t gotten around yet to bringing my kids. Maybe my oldest once when she was little, but definitely not the younger ones. Another piece of childhood lost. Damn.
Well thankfully he can’t do much with the Alabama quarter. I mean Helen Keller is already dead right?
On Yahoo they have a picture up of what it looks like now - I think it looks like Hannibal Lecter in his mask.
Boscibo, that’s awful! True, but awful!
Sorry to hear that. {{{{{{{{{{Granite Staters}}}}}}}}}}
I hope this isn’t a bad omen…
