Love this site. Just registered. Weighing the full membership pricetag. I’ve chanced across answers to questions I didn’t even know existed.
I have a question. Free services for which you have to hear or watch an ad. I was against the practice, thought it was annoying, but one I use now a lot is free411.com. I’m cellphone exclusively so had to pay for directory service. Suddenly I have no problem listening to a short ad to find a number a number for free.
You mean, like, television, radio, many websites or newspapers?
I’m not sure that avoiding advertising can really be considered a scruple, just a preference. And not a very strong one if you don’t mind listening to some ads to get a service you want.
I don’t know. I had a problem with advertising everywhere until a really good service came along that saved me money and made my life easier and suddenly I didn’t mind it so much.
I felt a bit betrayed by myself (like I was throwing in the towel) but love not paying for directory assistance (which I really feel should be free to everyone) and wondered if anyone had a comment.
If everyone loves a good advertisement around here, I guess we’re home free.
I don’t see an issue as long as you can choose between a pay service and an advertiser supported free service. There is no ethical issues involved with that at all. Remember that a great number of things make you pay AND listen to advertisements and there is no other choice.
You’ve made a choice to pay with time and irritation rather than with money. Did you sell out? Well, if you held the avoidance of advertising as a major guiding principle of life, I guess so. On the other hand, maybe other obligatory-to-watch-an-ad services just weren’t worth it to you, where this one is; and maybe your situation is such that spending the time makes more sense than spending the money. Since we don’t enough about the inside of your head to render a judgment here, I’d say you’ve asked a question that only you can answer.
I’d say you were right my friend. Scruples: bad word choice I guess. In any case, paying for directory service when I was already paying a c-note for phone service always seemed like a travesty to me. I hope these guys stick around.
Has anyone here ever used them? What’s your experience.
Guess my first post was kind of a dud. Somehow I saw some cosmic significance there for a moment. Perhaps there’s a small victory in fighting the ignorance that one must pay cold hard cash for directory service when now all one has to pay is 15-seconds of time.
And hey. Who knows. Maybe that ad will direct me to just the thing I’m looking for.
