What are the exact advantages of multi-grain food products? They’re practically everywhere. And it seems they are supposedly more healthy, though I am not sure why. What are their advantages over, say, just simple whole grain of one type, like wheat or oat?
Read a bit about essential amino acids. Short version: different grains supply certain amino acids in different proportions. Mixing the grains helps increase the chances of getting all the amino acids one needs (but can’t make on your own).
There’s also other nutrients of course. Basically any mono-diet is bad.
Most grains will have the same amino acids, but the missing ones will be supplied in any normal diet, whether you eat meat or not. Complementary proteins foods like rice and beans are staples in every culture and meats will also complement grains.
Multi-grain products are currently a fad and little more. They may give a different set of tastes, they may have more fiber, they may have a grittier texture, but there is no real health difference between multi-grains and whole grains of a single type. If you like them, fine. If not, real whole wheat is just as good for you.
It sounds healthy, doesn’t it?
We all know whole grain is healthy, and if one whole grain is good, more than one must be even better, right?
