Yeah you are right. That was also heartbreaking. I guess Evergreen just resonated with me more. There are many great episodes
What I like about Evergreen is that, in a way I never would have conceived of, it explains why the crown does what it does to its wearer. In putting on the crown Gunther becomes the person he wants to be who is also the person who treated him so horribly, going mad in the process - and thus future wearers also turn into a warped, insane version of Evergreen as well.

Yeah! I saw when it came out. Spot on - bleak but good. I think the cartoon is able to do more bleak stuff and get away with it because of the fantastic colors. And candy people!
Just bumping with some end-of-Season-6 spoilers because man, a lot has been happening.
Finn
has confirmed his age as 16, so he’s definitely aged since the first season. Also, he can will the universe to obey his wishes. And he’s got his grass sword back (sort of).
Martin
after some further shenanigans on another planet, has ascended to a higher plane of existence thanks to the Causality Comet, to unknown effect.
Betty
has now got Magic Man’s powers, which seem to be considerable (albeit not limitless). No indications yet whether she will become a jerk, but it should certainly help her ongoing quest to help Simon.
Meanwhile Magic Man
has lost his powers, but appears to still be a jerk. However, we now have some backstory suggesting why he’s a jerk.
More significantly, Gunther
is not actually a penguin but rather a primordial chaos demon trapped on Earth named Orgalorg.
And PBhas lost her throne to the King of Ooo, in part due to Gunther’s various machinations and in part due to her own inattention.

Finn: [contemplates for a moment] Hmm. You know what? [backs off from wizard] I think I’m cool with that. [The sword retracts and wraps around Finn’s arm.]
Grassy Wizard: What?
