Adventure Time!
I’ve been catching up on back episodes of this and am finding it one of the most creative and original programs on television at the moment.
So much wonderful weirdness, so many unanswered questions. Is Susan Strong really Finn’s mother? Will Betty save Simon? How old IS Princess Bubblegum? Will Finn ever find true love? Will Sweet Pig Trunks be able to control his inner Lich? And what the hell was “Food Chain” about?
I love how the episodes have something for kids and adults, kids can watch it as just goofy adventures but there are deep issues or humor only adults notice.
I also like how “fair” the show is even to the villains.
Beemo and Gunther are my favorites, but lately I’ve been missing Hunson Abadeer, Marceline’s dad. Marceline hasn’t been around in a while either, which is a shame.
I’ve never gotten the feeling that Susan Strong is Finn’s mother. I don’t get the sense she’s old enough. And now that we’ve met Finn’s dad a few times, I don’t think Susan would put up with his shit.
As for Betty saving Simon, it doesn’t seem likely, as the recent Graybles episode showed briefly a shot of a creature resembling the Ice King, evolved into something… different. From other stuff in the episode, we know that it’s set in the future. Simon’s path seems to be set and Betty seems to be just another sad chapter in his tragic story.
I do indeed love the show! It’s so silly and absurd, but also insanely deep and thoughtful. My favorite episodes are the Simon & Marcy ones.
Unfortunately, being a cord cutter makes it difficult to watch the eps. I have Sling TV and it comes with Cartoon Network, but that is one of the stations that doesn’t allow for VoD (darn them!). I have watched all of the eps up to the end of Season 5 by paying per ep on Amazon (but that gets a bit pricey too fast)
I don’t think that necessarily means it’s Ice King. The crown turns anyone who wears it into someone who looks like that magician Gunther wanted to be. I can’t remember his name.
They have a lot of them on Hulu now. I pay for them, also. And it gets a bit pricey but I don’t mind. It’s my favorite show. And something like 20 bucks a year isn’t too bad.
I have no idea who my favorite character is. It’s either Lumpy Space Princess, BMO, or Shelby.
(Disclaimer: I did not think any of this up. It comes from a Redditor called ForkintheOutlet.)
Did you wonder what the theme of last week’s Graybles 1000+ episode was? After all, all of the Graybles episodes have specific themes which viewers are invited to guess. Of course, in this one, our narrator Cuber says “Oh, and you children at home: don’t bother trying to guess tonight’s theme. Applesauce to a theme! Your friend Cuber doesn’t want to die!”
Nevertheless, consider this:
In the first Grayble, Cuber utters the word physiological
In the second, Finn uses the word safety.
In the third, Ice King says the word love.
In the fourth, Starchy uses the word esteem.
In the fifth, Cuber’s sister utters the words self-actualization.
I’m thinking it might be Gunther the penguin. The latest episode shows her trying to destroy Bubblegum in her dreams and in a previous episode she took the crown and tried to destroy the candy kingdom. The creature we saw wearing the crown was flying which is something a flightless bird no doubt dreams of.
I’m thinking she’s in love with the Ice king and that’s why she’s mad at Bubblegum for often being a target of Ice king’s affections. Betty will probably save Simon from the curse and Gunther will take the crown and try to destroy Betty for taking away the Ice king.
The first time I watched this show I thought I was having an acid flashback.
My favorite so far is the “Dungeon” episode. Wherein they took liberties with the sword slashy thing that they do. I LOL’d towards the end when they did the sword slashy thing followed by: “New Found Respect”.
It’s hard to tell her age from the drawing style but Finn is, what, 13 (not sure if or how much he’s aging over the series) so Susan would only have to be in her thirties. In support of the argument we’ve got the potential red herring of Finn saying “Sun! Sun!” (son?) when they first met and the blond hair and general heroic outlook in common. Susan also appears to have some sort of surgical implants in her head which may have happened after - or because of - Martin’s interaction with her; she may not have been like this before she met him. So I’m not ruling it out.
That was my thought too - that this was *definitely *a red herring and that it’s someone else (and Gunther seems like a likely candidate).
I’m watching them on YouTube. I haven’t looked at all of them but most of them seem to be on there as long as you’re willing to put up with all sorts of weird framing formats.
Oh and the ice wizard who created the crown was Evergreen (an odd name for an ice wizard).
I’m a big fan of adventure time. But I don’t have the personality type or spare time to deeply contemplate each episode or think about episode continuity etc. I just appreciate a TV show that is defies any expectation.
I’m used to weird cartoons, from *Ren and Stimpy *to Uncle Grandpa. Where Adventure Time kicks my ass is in the odd non-canonical episode where they just go “You think this show is weird? You ain’t seen nothing yet!” and then hit us with “Food Chain” or “A Glitch Is A Glitch”. My reaction to both of those was “What the hell did I just watch?”
They do finally have episodes on Hulu, but that ends with the 5th season. The 6th season won’t be on Hulu until, I guess, the season ends. Which is better than it used to be, true.
Also, ‘Evergreen’ (season 6 ep 24). If I say “this is one of the sweetest, saddest, episodes of any animated TV show”, then people’s expectations might rise far beyond what the episode actually delivers. So I won’t say that. But check it out anyway.
I’d put “I Remember You” above it in the “one of the sweetest, saddest episodes of any animated TV show” category. Ice King blithely singing about his own mental deterioration with a crying Marceline singing along was heartbreaking.
Speaking of Simon and Marcy, I looked up the episode and re-watched it. According to the Interwebs the “helpful pink goo” was identified in the AT video game as Princess Bubblegum’s “parents”. I don’t know how that works, to be honest, but there you go. Apparently canon.
Any Adventure Time fan should have The Art of Ooo, a beautiful thick book with gorgeous images and lots of commentary by the writers and production team.
