Advice for the recently Mugged

Because health insurance is like gold nowadays. This is why at my work we require not just the health insurance card, but a picture ID.

Sorry to hear about this. Hope your swift actions prevent a lot of hassle.

My WAG is so that when they try to do something big with the credit cards, if someone says “I’ll need to see two forms of ID” they can show it along with the DL.

Much sympathy. mr emilyforce got mugged at gunpoint half a block from my apartment back in 1995 and it still affects him occasionally, I think. They beat him up a little, because he only had $2.35 on him, though no shots were fired. I lived in that apartment for nine years and never heard of any other armed muggings in the neighborhood… anyway, I’m very glad your thugs didn’t physically hurt you.

So his drivers license didn’t have your current address?

No, it didn’t. You are supposed to write the correct address on the back after you notify the DMV, but he never did it (nor I) (writing the address on the back that is, the DMV has been duly notified).

Some insurance companies still use a social security number as the ID number. Call them ASAP to request a new card and a new ID number.

Depending on how you’re feeling, you might consider some short-term counseling. I got mugged in 1993 (no gun, but I got a solid punch in the face), and it was a couple of years before I could walk down a street, even in broad daylight, without panic symptoms. I don’t know if counseling would have helped, but it certainly wouldn’t have hurt.

You want to put a 90 day extra security on ALL 3 credit agencies; I think it is easy and you can do it on-line.

Please tell me you have Driver ID #'s, rather than your SSN on your liscences.

Contact all your accounts and tell them to flag your accounts to allow no change of address; if they can’t do this, cancel the account. See if you can do the same thing at the post office.

When you file a police report, do not let them put your address on the report.

Don’t forget, they might have written down information on the items they did not take from the wallet.

So, to summarize, you want to have the following accounts cancelled and new account #'s issued:
major credit cards
store credit cards
debit cards
bank accounts
cells phones
health insurance [did they print your SSN on the card?]
driver’s liscense
student ID [if it is a magnetic key; and did they print your SSN on the card?]
library cards
rental cards [blockbuster, etc.]
change any passwords/PINs

And file a police report
