Wow, came across this thread just as I am faced with a similar situation. My cat had some cancerous masses removed Monday. I’m going to follow up with a veterinary oncologist next week to see if I there is any worthwhile treatment to carry on, but unless he tells me that there is a worthwhile prognosis for a 15-year old cat, I think I will just let my Emily enjoy a few months more (she doesn’t appear to be in pain or distress) until she shows that she needs to go off to a different place.
My mother just took my dad’s cat to the vet today. And we are looking at a not very good prognosis either. She is at least 12 and has some sort of thyroid problem, I am not quite clear on that. I was just now crying at the thought that if the medicine she was given does not help her in the next two weeks or so we will probably have to put her down.
It’s doubly sad to me because my dad died almost 4 years ago and now it looks like his cat is going.
Even if the medicine does work , she’ll still have to go through surgery. I am just so sad and this thread just made me sadder.
Well, one of mine was having difficulty drinking, eating and for the last couple hours it was a struggle to breathe.
Gypsy turned out to be in a pretty bad way, large tumour on her liver, I guess she just lost interest, I tried tempting her with her favourote foods, the special cat milk that has a stratospheric price tag, and she did pick a little at it.
I had her booked for the vets tomorrow, but she was struggling too much, went to a nearish night time emergency vet who told me the truth.
I only had her for maybe nine months, seems she had been living on the street for most of her life and that kind of life is very hard on a cat, she settled in and took possession of her room, the other cats gave her the space.
I think she was fairly happy, but the time comes, it would have been cruel to keep her when she was in daily pain which she must have been from the tumour.
She’s gone now.
Condolences to all of you. I hope you feel the peace I did after I made the decision. It is the kindest thing you can do for them.
