Advice on websites recommendations for new appliances

Our dryer may have given up the ghost - it was having trouble stopping, now it won’t start*, and so we are sort of in the market for a replacement.

Anyway, I used to have a membership to Consumer Reports online, but the price for what I was getting wasn’t really worth it to me. Google on “best clothes dryer” turns up loads of hits.

Can anyone recommend a good, non-biased web resource for determining what might be the best major appliance? I’m sure we’ll use it for more than a dryer down the road.

Also, would you recommend picking up a second hand dryer, or would it likely just be buying somebody else’s problems? We bought an inexpensive washer like that a couple of years back and it ended up having the same issues as the washer we were looking to replace, so eventually we just got a new one.

And of course if you love your dryer and want to recommend it, feel free. FWIW we use a gas dryer, not electric.

*Or suggestions on how to fix the current dryer would be welcome for the time being. It doesn’t start now and you can hear something like a solenoid(?) sort of humming when you depress the start button.

iVillage Gardenweb has some pretty good forums on the discussion of appliances and fixtures, for remodeling or building a new home.

Do you have the equivalent ofAppliancesmart near you? It’s not second hand, but they do have a lot of scratch and dent appliances.

We don’t have those. Not sure if we have another similar chain. I tend to only think about appliances when I need a new one, which is fortunately enough not too often.
