Guilt by association is good enough for me! Gays do want to molest children after all.

Inviting someone to speak on your radio broadcast and praising them as one of the best writers and thinkers when they have repeatedly, publically made those type of statements, not to mention wrote a book expounding on them, is far more than simple association.
You haven’t given me any reason to believe otherwise. If you have a reason to believe that the DoS is a bad idea, share it. Otherwise, I’ll certainly feel free to label you as I wish.
I almost wish I’d still be in school on that day - I’d participate (but my semester will be over, and besides, I’m quiet most of the day anyways!)
For high school students, this sort of activity/protest is the only form available to them. Boycotts or other “financial” protests aren’t something an average student can really do (most have no money to begin with!), so it comes down to simply being brave enough to speak up (or not, in this case!) I mean, it’s maybe as effective as wearing a pink or yellow or red or white or [insert colour here] ribbon - on it’s own, it doesn’t do much, but at the very least it states an opinion and may get someone to think about the issue.
I don’t think it’s particularly disruptive, either. The idea isn’t that students don’t do anything school-related, they simply don’t speak during the day. There are many other forms of communication, including writing, signing, body language, etc. For most things a teacher might call a student on, simply going to the blackboard or writing the answer on a piece of paper and showing it ought to be enough. As for language classes… heck, it’s one day. I very much doubt that missing one day of actually speaking Spanish or French or English would mess up a child’s education, and the written aspects of these languages are important to learn, too.
If a teacher can’t cope with one (or half, or all) of his/her students not speaking for one day … then I would think they aren’t very creative, or even good teachers!
What’s the association between gays and child molestation?
When I was in high school, my boyfriend participated in something like this. The purpose wasn’t to protest mistreatment of gays, though, but to raise awareness of drunk driving. The silence was symbolic of people being killed by drunk drivers.
It really wasn’t disruptive at all. I didn’t even notice for most of the day until I got to a class near the end of the day that I was in with him, and he wrote me a note instead of talking to me before class. (I don’t remember if participants answered direct questions asked by teachers)
Would those of you who are against the Day of Silence be against a similar event for some cause, like awareness of drunk driving, that has nothing to do with gays?
I remember a pit thread here about the day of silence that brought up some interesting points along those lines. I’ll do a search…
… I guess there’s actually two:
GLBT National Day of Silence: Shut the Fuck Up! and
The National Day of Silence
In my senior year of high school (I graduated in 2004) I attempted to participate in DoS but failed. I wasn’t much of a talker except when I was with my friends, who I only saw a few times during the school day, so it mostly didn’t make a difference. In my physics class we were working in lab groups and I decided not to stay silent because I wanted to help out and thought it would be kind of jerkish not to. That’s pretty much how every encounter that day ended up going.
I can tell you for a fact that students who are not gay are harassed in high schools (and middle schools- it’s worse in middle school) for being gay. I was harassed for being a lesbian in middle school and high school. I’m not a lesbian.
Of course, from my point of view, it wouldn’t have made the harassment any more acceptable if I were a lesbian.
Yes, there is. It’s school. You’re just not going to face the same sort of penalties for breaking a school rule as you are for breaking a law.
GodDAMN it. Why can’t Alabama go ahead and finish outsourcing these kinds of wackos out to the Front Range or the PNW? I’m sick of Reactionary Lunacy as a cottage industry in the South.
That would be pederasts. Gays want to molest each other.
Hell, yeah. But perhaps we ought to call it Shut The Fuck Up Day. And seeing as it’s a worthy cause, once a year is too seldom. How about Thursdays? Would every Thursday be all right?
