Affiliate Links (i.e. Google Ads): Do you really make money from them?

Before I possibly waste time on this, I was wondering if you webmasters (or even MySpace website owners) actually make money with those Google Ad or Yahoo ad affiliate links.

(those would be the links appearing on your web page which, when clicked, lead you to a business website whereby, if you buy something from that site, a commission is paid to the original webmaster whose link got you there in the first place).

I know that search engine optimization is important for my potential website but was wondering if people generally do buy things through links on other sites. My feeling is, No, they don’t because I believe that Human Nature would make them not buy on the first visit but on subsequent visits. And if they do come back to visit, it would be to go directly to the business website instead of through the link.

But I hope I’m wrong on this assumption…

One of my collegues and his friends started an online humor magazine about a year ago (I programmed it). He added Google AdWords and TribalFusion ads to his site. The site ended up getting a LOT of recognition, and continuously gets about 50k visits a day. If one of their articles gets Farked, or if one of their writers is interviewed somewhere, hits will go up into the hundreds of thousands for a few days.

I think they make between $1000 and $1300/mo from their advertising. As far as I know they have yet to sell any actual ad space. They just use those 2 ad services.

Stuff like that seems to work well only if you have a lot of views, though. Just putting up a page on the Web and and slapping up some AdWords isn’t going to do it. Having a ton of unique content and a lot of repeat visits is what brings in the $$.

I make about US$100 a month from my Disney-related fan site. Easy cash as far as I’m concerned.
