I don’t find it funny, but I’m not their target audience - I’m already on their side WRT government-sanctioned racial discrimination.
Completely off-topic: how can you be 1/11th Cherokee? I can’t figure out the math on how to achieve this. It should be a power of 2, right? Or at least a multiple of 2. :dubious:
Or am I making a fool of myself by missing the joke? Wouldn’t be the first time.
It’s about as clichéd as women experimenting with lesbianism during their freshmen year. They could at least add in legacy and athletic admissions just so that it doesn’t scream “Whining white boys who don’t have anything better to do than complain about not getting into college because of AA…when lo and behold THEY ARE IN COLLLEGE!”
They need a new act.
That’s pretty much it. ACM was parodying some white Americans’ tendency to identify as some small proportion Indian (and especially Cherokee) based on some half-remembered oral family lore, despite not having any connection at all to the culture, and often no actual Indian ancestry.
It should be trite at this point, but unfortunately it is topical. The California state government is considering ignoring its constitution and reinstating AA. The student government at Berkeley installed a phone bank for students to use to lobby Governor Brown. In response to this the college Republicans did this stunt to get publicity and the liberal groups obliged them by freaking out about it. It seems so odd that in 2011 it is still controversial to say that governments should not be discriminating against its citizens based on race.
So unintelligent people have no problem with it? How about people who care about people find it offensive?
Yes.
I find it boring. It’s the Everybody Loves Raymond of protests, and I’m unsurprised that it amuses mediocre minds.
Not as moronic as a “white pride” parade, but damned close.
I’d tell the Young Republicans that if they’d just forfeit all of their assets, agree to be torn from their family, get shipped in horrible conditions on a boat to a strange country where they then spend the rest of their lives working difficult physical labor and have shitty living conditions, then their children do the same, then their children, then maybe we’ll set them free, then several generations later we’ll sell their great, great grandchildren muffins at a discount. I’m sure they’d be more than happy to take that deal.
Not very offensive, certainly not funny. What is the word I’m looking for…? Oh yeah!
Stupid.
Oh my gods. Are people at Berkeley still whining about this? Jesus Christ, let it go, Cal. This is why Stanford doesn’t take you seriously.
It’s just stupid. There are more effective ways to make a statement about affirmative action–one could start by making the prices proportional to the actual preferences granted in typical affirmative action scenarios, instead of ridiculously variant.
Also, non-slapstick humor generally requires originality. This lacks that, although it might be the first time Qin Shi Huangdi has heard of it, so that’s why he’s so amused.
The pricing scheme is off. Every study I’ve ever read shows black women way ahead of black men in economic performance. The website says All women will get $0.25 off those prices.
So if a black man pays 75¢ then a black woman would pay 50¢? That is wrong, black women are better off as whole than black men, so they should pay more.
If you want to make a statement via joke get your stats straight first.
I saw this back 10 years ago on an episode of Boston Public. Republicans got it wrong then and its disheartening to see they’re still getting it wrong now.
If they really wanted to do it right, they’d reverse the pricing, and add on factors like blacks can’t eat the cookies in certain areas or they’d have it confiscated, while the white kids get to eat it anywhere they want. Of course, once the Native American buys it, he gets killed and the cookie is returned
Here is the data on admissions to Cal for the last few cycles:
0.8% American Indian
3.3% African American
13.0% Chicano/Latino
41.6% Asian American
33.9% White
7.5% Not Given
Now lets look at the Cal numbers compared to the California ethnic breakdown from the Census:
0.8% / 1.0% American Indian
3.3% / 6.2% African American
13.0% / 37.6% Chicano/Latino
41.6% / 13.0% Asian American
33.9% / 40.1% White
7.5% Not Given
I didn’t see a quick list of ethnic breakdown by high school students unfortunately - though I am sure it is out there. It looks like Cal needs to throw out the Asians and bring in more Blacks, a few Whites and lots of Hispanics.
Speaking as a straight white native-born Christian European-American male, I’m going to say it’s embarassing to see my fellow SWNCEM’s whining about how oppressed they are.
Hell, even Klansmen can complain about being poor. But a bunch of collegiate Young Republicans? They’re the most privileged people on Earth who aren’t named Windsor.
You have a cite for the general SES of white Republicans at college vs. other groups? Your description does not match my experience from the 80s.
I claim mitigating circumstances not being American…
It was not a joke. It was designed to make a point that the poor trod upon whites are getting shafted by a system that helps others out. Of course who owned the cupcakes, and who was making the profit? Whitey. Upper class rich whitey. It is truly a display of how the world is set up for the rich, white upper class whites.
But there was no humor.
