I probably know the least about Friends than anyone here, but I recall a flashback where Phoebe was a top-level executive. She had a heart attack, and that’s when I assume she turned her life around (probably living on the street for a while). It still doesn’t explain how she knows Monica, though.

When and why did Phoebe turn into such a (relatively speaking) bitch? This is not trivia per se, but I don’t watch Friends enough to know the answer, only to notice. In the earlier episodes, it seemed as if she played the perennial optimist and looked on the bright side much more often. In the few later episodes I’ve seen, she seems to take a lot more potshots at other Friends, something that seems (to me) to be somewhat out of character. She just doesn’t seem to be the same happy-go-lucky-not-enough-to-make-you-sick-but-enough-to-make-you-laugh character. I think the turning point was somewhere around the point where she had the kids.
Did she change? If so, did they ever explain it on the show? Was there an IRL reason for it (i.e. the actress was getting sick of being stereotypically blonde)?
Rythmdvl, you’ve touched upon a subject my friends are now sick of.
Personally, I can’t stand Phoebe. Its enough to make me not watch. I think her jokes are lame attempts at humor, not to mention predictable, and I think her role could be completely absorbed by Chandler. I see no point for Phoebe. I think most of her subplots are annoying, distracting and unfunny. The exception to this was when she was having the kids.
Does anyone else out there feel the same? Who else can’t stand Phoebe?
Sorry, Connor, but I love Phoebe. The character is almost an exact impersonation of my best friend. In the episodes where Teri Garr plays her birthmother, she is exactly like my best friend’s mother.
