Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D S01E03: The Asset (Spoilers)

He kinda does. He was Lazer or Blazer or some kind of -azer in Dodgeball(far left).
[/QUOTE]

The credits on his IMDB page are hilariously on-point: he’s Goon, he’s Henchman, he’s Big Cop, he’s Navy Guy, he’s Extraction Guy #1, he’s Bandit #1, he’s Hunk #1.

(Oh, and he’s Blazer, come to that.)

I’m relieved I’m not the only one who noticed the shotgun screwup. Vented to the wife also. Seriously, fix that kinda crap.

Law of Video # 3962(b) - All shotguns sound like pump action shotguns.

I missed the noise the shotgun made during that scene, I’ll have to listen when this episode is shown in rerun.

I did have a good laugh when I saw Coulson show up on the beach in the suit. Yes, he would look better in tactical gear but I agree with El Kabong that this is going to be a running joke.

I didn’t like the super laser fence so much, I think they may have been better off just making it an electric fence. In the scene, they’re making this big deal about hanging out by the fence waiting for it to shut down because it’s so deadly and a seagull flies past. what keeps the birds and other critters from zapping themselves on the fence.

Another week with a Chekhov’s Gun moment – this time Skye uses the slick move to disarm an opponent after learning it at the beginning. I could go without the moves being telegraphed at the beginning of the show, but I thought it was very funny when she said she wouldn’t be able to use it and then jumped out the window.

I knew Graviton was coming and I called out that Coulson was going to shoot the window and Hall was going to fall in. I did like the actor playing Hall, obviously he’s coming back and I look forward to seeing him.

I admit that I think the characters need a little work, but I think they’re coming along.

I get the sense that Whedon is ‘building’ the group he wants the show to be about. Sorkin does this too. Some people when they are new to a group act differently than when they are around close friends. But when this group becomes a ‘family’, that’s when their true characters will become apparent. This also lets you build towards something rather that start with a complete group. I prefer this in shows, but understand how it’s hard to pull off when you could be cancelled at any time.
Also, to whoever upthread doesn’t like the ‘family’ aspect of the core group, should probably stop watching. It’s going to happen, they will be a family and cover for each others’ mistakes. Even when Skye turns traitor, Coulson will still believe in her until she double-crosses the Rising Tide.

What I most fear is that (being a Whedon-related series, after all), for example, Ming-Na’s character turns out to be a double agent and permanently cripples or kills Fitz. But not until the family aspect has been firmly embedded, so we care.

I’m waiting for the moment when Coulson finds out that he is a clone or LMD.

Of course, he may already know(even an imitation Coulson isn’t going to be an idiot), and is dropping hints to see how long they will continue the charade.

Yeah, that was telegraphed pretty clearly. The show is just a little formulaic right now. Hopefully it’ll hit its stride soon.

I haven’t seen anything on who the target demographic is. If it’s young enough, then they don’t really have to worry about it being formulaic: this is where young watchers will learn the formulae.

I liked this episode. Apart from Skye in her red dress, I especially liked the fact that Quinn wasn’t a moustache-twirling villain. He and SHIELD were doing the same thing - trying to save Hall after he’d been “kidnapped” by “the bad guys”.

I was willing to believe that this was an in-character mistake. Skye was trying really hard to talk her way out of getting shot in the face, and doing an unsurprisingly miserable job of it.

Because it wasn’t a device, it was an element. It would take nuclear fission to turn it into anything else.

Or zombie/undead. Let’s not forget the supernatural element.

There’s the whole “Thor” thing. Plus, IIRC there’s a Dr. Strange movie that’s being discussed–they could introduce the concept here.

Also, I’m going back and reading my old Strange Tales (featuring SHIELD and Dr Strange!) and…I’ve gotta retract my complaints with Coulson’s suit on the beach. Nick Fury wore his suit everywhere. I haven’t gotten this far yet, but I remember a Steranko (or late Kirby) story where Fury peels off a wetsuit only to have an impeccably tailored suit (tie and cufflinks and everything) underneath.*

So–Coulson has a legit reason for the suit. If they make it cool. Again SHIELD guys, look at FRINGE and Warehouse 13–neither should have cooler toys than you.

*Granted, it was a super-spy suit! The tie had a circuit-board printed into it so it could be a radio. His cufflinks (clipped together) make a low-grade bullet deflector. The jacket itself would marginally deflect bullets, and the shirt explodes if lit on fire.

I don’t think it was a mistake - I think “what better way to distract guy than to be suddenly a confused, scared little defenseless girl” - which is accurate and puts him off his guard.

The only thing I got confused on - did Quinn escape? if so, Skye’s ties with the ‘Red Tide’ are burned UNLESS that was the plan - who knows …

Quinn got out on the helicopter, so you may be right there. Skye did message someone in Red Tide last week that she was “in” so maybe she’ll be able to play it off.

As I recall, his shirt always ripped off to display his manly torso. Unless he was wearing a jumpsuit.

Of course my memories go back to his battles with HYDRA, so maybe his fashion sense recovered later in his career.

Regards,
Shodan

Sorry, I misunderstood you. So he can’t be Dr. Gravity, and is most likely to be Graviton. Well, there goes any clever naming ideas for him. :frowning:

I’m pretty sure that’s the same guy who played Jennifer Love Hewitt’s husband on “Ghost Whisperer” (goes to check) - yup, that’s David Conrad.

Another problem I’m having with this show gelling is that I don’t care about any of the characters except Coulson. I don’t know if time will fix that - it seems like I loved Buffy and Willow and Xander from the first time I saw them on screen.

I don’t think we’re supposed to like them yet - they are not a ‘team’ in any sense of the word other than a group of people working together - individually, I still can’t understand fitz or simmons and I get they are supposed to be, what, twins or something? I think it will take several episodes before it will get cohesive enough.

And yeah - Mack should totally be the co-pilot… THAT was a charactor introduction that worked.

I laughed out loud during the shoot-out scene on the beach, when the fence goes down and handsome generic super-agent guy, instead of just walking backwards a foot or two dramatically throws himself across two feet of beach to the other side of the fence.

But other then unintentional humour, and the Mack Truck guy, who really should replace the above mentioned super-agent guy on the main cast, this show is pretty terrible.

Just finished the episode.

I liked it, but it wasn’t as strong as the first two. FitzSimmons aren’t doing a very good job of distinguishing themselves, but hopefully that will come. This was a Skye/Ward backstory episode, for better or for worse.

Some of my thoughts about upthread commentary:

The Calvary: I got the impression that she wasn’t really thrilled with the idea of being back in combat, but that over the course of this particular mission she discovered that being on the back ranks listening in as other people (who she know’s she’s better than) potentially getting their asses handed to them is more stressful for her. I can totally believe that. She didn’t have a choice but to be involved the first two episodes, so she could continue to think that she didn’t want to be in combat based on those. Here, she actually had to sit back and listen as things went down (sometimes not so well)

She doesn’t want to go back to the paperwork fort, so the only other option is to be in action herself to save the less skilled agents (read: Coulson) from biting it. Remains to be seen if whatever got her (laser fence to the face, I’m guessing based on her stroking her jawline when the fence was mentioned) gives her a case of PTSD or jitters while she’s in combat. Knowing the Whedons, most likely yes. That could be very fun for personal trauma exploitation.

The Skye/Ward thing was a little overplayed, but that’s because Ward irritates me more than a little bit.

Quinn reminded me strongly of someone, and I can’t think who, but it bothered me the whole episode.

I really like Agent Mack. I hope he comes back.

I noticed a bit of re-used footage in the “gravity tilt” room, and the FX for the blob eating Hall were TERRIBLE. I also noticed that their nifty glowy touchscreens of wonder were either out of focus or out of frame for a lot of the shots. Makes me wonder what their budget is for these episodes - they blew 14 mil on the Pilot, according to rumor, but I bet it isn’t nearly that much for regular episodes.

We should get a little more from FitzSimmons next - we’ve gotten nice little tantalizing bits from the Calvary and Coulson throughout, and a whole episode devoted to Skye/Ward, so it’s the geniuses turn next (I hope).

Also, I think this makes me a fangirl, but I am seriously getting upset at how often Coulson is taking damage to his face. STOP HITTING HIM IN THE FACE!! IT IS A PRETTY FACE, STOP HURTING IT! He got stabbed by Loki and died for chrissake, cut the man (cyborg/zombie/clone/LMD) some slack! /fangirl rant.

Also, Cavalry, Goddamnit. I swear sunday school ruined me for good.

I think part of Coulson’s reason for picking May was to help get her back in the saddle, and we’ll get more into what made her drop field work as the show progresses.

It’s just speculation, but the Whedon’s seem to have a tendency to picture certain actors in certain roles and write/direct to them, and I find myself seeing the intended actor. I’ve mentioned before that I think Skye was written for Eliza Dushku; Quinn struck me as intended for Tahmoh Pinikett (also from Dollhouse).
