Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D S01E06: F.Z.Z.T

If so (and I’m perfectly willing to admit I may have heard it wrong) it makes their rescue even easier. Somehow I doubt Coulson has the only flying car around. The local SHIELD office could rescue Ward and Simmons much quicker than the navy could, and return them to the Bus before it gets unloaded at the Sandbox.

Watched it last night - definitely “Moroccan Office,” meaning (to me) a SHIELD office. (screw those extra periods)

I also saw that as partly why the Sandbox CO was so pissed - instead of being a couple of hours in the air to get there, that’s a *huge *detour that wasn’t announced, and presumably wasn’t explained further (the CO’s snarky “technical difficulties” line implies that’s all he’s got to go on, and the directive earlier from May to “speak to Ward” if Coulson won’t talk didn’t work, because Ward is not on the Bus to explain):

 1. Ward & Jemma get sea-retrieval by Moroccan SHIELD
 2. Bus lands (in Morocco?) and waits for them, probably re-quarantining the helmet and fixing the lab while grounded
 3. Coulson has to deal with Moroccan SHIELD to deflect Sandbox Unhappiness™ and to get
 4. W&J returned to the Bus, and then FINALLY
 5. Bus resumes trip to Sandbox.

Even being amazingly generous with the efficiency of SHIELD, that’s at least 8-12 *hours *of unexplained downtime.

Coulson’s proving that he’s got a really loose leash with his team here - he’s totally unphased by the idea of getting called to the carpet on this.

I dont think thats right - the ‘technical difficulties’ was so that Coulson could just shut down the conversation of “jettison fitzz to save the bus” - we’re not privvy to how ward and fitz get back to the bus, for all we know, they met them at the sandbox.

Yeah, usually. I actually thought she was going to make it with how long they were dragging out that story. That’s not Whedon’s typical Diabolus Ex Machina. Then she jumped…

I like this explanation.

They were found immediately. All Shield parachutes are equipped with a standard tracking device for just this reason.

I just made that up but it sounds plausible, doesn’t it?

Jessica Lange almost destroyed her career with good acting. Her first role was in the 1976 remake of King Kong. And her acting was terrible. So a lot of people assumed she was a bad actress. It was three years before she was cast in another movie and that’s when people realized she was actually a really good actress - but her character in King Kong was supposed to be a bad actress so Lange played her that way.

Had Simmons died, S.H.I.E.L.D. would have been faced with the task of locating another attractive, scientifically talented woman whose last name can be blended in a clever manner with that of Fitz. And you know what? Not as difficult as you’d think. I hereby present porn star Tera Patrick. Her last name gives us FitzPatrick as the successor to FitzSimmons, and since she has – I’m really not making this up – degrees in both nursing and microbiology, she’s got the science thing down as well. And she’s comfortable in front of the camera.

Then if Fitz gets killed and we need another agent to handle the robotics and other hi-tech stuff, we could cast an actress whose name is linked to that - somebody like Carmen Electra.

Has anyone figured this one out yet?

It’s the sound of electricity fizzling out?

That and the (upcoming/telegraphed/fake-you-out) lack of Simmons. It’s kinda reaching, tho…

Yep, I saw it as a play on Fitz’s name and the sound of an electric short.

Or you could have called it much earlier in the episode, when the team was investigating the first victim, and* a spark flew from the victim to Simmons* just before he dropped to the ground.

I was just surprised they didn’t even scan Simmons at the firehouse (true, she hadn’t been in contact with the firefighters, but still … not very thorough, is it?).

I’m going to throw out a WAG and suggest that Skye is Agent May’s daughter.

Two Things:

 1. I’m starting to wonder if seeing all the prior Whedon stuff is a detriment to watching this show. I’m not ready to say that the Whedon team is running out of ideas, but I do keep seeing things that remind me maybe too much of their past work. See my above spoiler for one. This was real close to that episode in a lot of ways. For another, the whole “Fitz and Simmons get caught imitating Ward” bit was done way better in
Angel, with Cordy and Wes’s classic Buffy and Angel impressions
. I dunno… Maybe there are only so many ideas out there and if not prior Whedonverse shtick, I’d be comparing it to other prior shows anyway…
 2. The whole floating corpse thing, I think was supposed to imply that the corpses (and the surrounding area) were charged and repelling each other. If the virus traveled in electric sparks (which is of course utter bollocks, but lets go with it), the discharge that kills them would be a bunch of electrons flowing out, taking the virus (which would be orders of magnitude larger than an electron, but again, let’s go with it) with them. That leaves the corpse and surrounding area with a large positive charge.

Now for some math. If we assume a 100kg man, equal charges on the man and ground, and a 1 meter float for simplicity… coulombs law says that to exert the 100 N of force to keep him aloft, the charges would have to be about 100 uC. Assuming that that charge on the ground stays localized (which it won’t, because it’s inherently grounded, but…) and that a nearby spot on the ground is uncharged, someone standing there would be at a 900kV potential difference from the corpse. So that little zap Simmons got would be a LOT bigger, and probably would kill her outright, but then would ground out the corpse and allow it to drop. (yes, yes, it’s the current that kills, but there’s an awful lot of current in a 100 uC discharge that happens in the short time of a spark…)

See, COMIC BOOK SCIENCE!

One of those kids in the opening scene was the same kid that was on Master Chef Jr. (Troy) Which I thought was a little weird. What is he? Is he a chef prodigy? Or is he an actor? Because the two of them together seem implausible to me.

Decided he wanted to try acting after getting his big break on MCJ? Doesn’t seem implausible.

Troy’s an actor. He’s done a few commercials and he’s also a regular panelist on the YouTube show Kids React.

Okay, he’s an actor. Now I can’t help thinking MCJ is just a big sham. (I know, hold the presses, a reality show turns out to be a sham.)

Six of one, half a dozen of the other. After all, no reason he can’t like to cook as well. Doesn’t the pool of auditions for any reality show always have a lot of actors? I think Steve Martin was on The Dating Game or something…
