Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D S01E18: Providence (open spoilers)

Nap of the Earth?

Not against SHIELD weaponry. More realistically, how did they get it there? The Fridge is back of beyond, and appears to be a very tall tower in the middle of a flat plain. HYDRA would have had to stage that chopper from somewhere, because they aren’t all that big on legs. Even Evil Empires need time to get assets in place for an attack. Hydra did it in 24 hours? Not bloody likely. I can see Hand’s jet getting clearance to land. But nothing else should have been able to get anywhere near the Fridge.

Could we have a hint, here?

Interesting EW article from last week’s ep:

I believe they’re referring to last night’s episode of “Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD”, where gravitonium made a reappearance.

And considering that in it’s first appearance A hand and a face were seen in the shifting mass right after they put it in its vault, yes, I’d say Graviton will be appearing as well.

I’ve merged ouryL’s thread into this week’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. thread.

How can you have a super secret base that is a 100 story building on a barren flat plain? Makes absolutely no sense, but it’s a great visual. It looked a bit like the Burj Khalifa.

Can anyone who DVR’d the series recap the scene?

It doesn’t quite match what they’re saying, but the scene is online. Skye never talks, but they’re showing her at the fallen agents memorial while Phil’s voiceover is describing to May Skye’s reaction when he told her what he learned about her past. As he’s saying “The world is full of evil, and lies, and pain, and death, and you can’t hide from it. You can only face it.” the camera pans away from Skye and over to Ward.

I thought it was just the closest flat place with no trees that they could land to the coordinates.

Sure, hard to believe. But considering the secret base that is revealed in the latest Captain America, if they can have that, they can have this.

I loved the Hail Hydra line. You’d think that in a real secret organization dedicated to evil or something, there will be true believers and there will be guys who are just there who’s creeped out by the enthusiasm

Lola is Coulson’s flying red convertible. The plane itself is The Bus.

Found this episode appropriately anti-climatic after last week’s roller coaster ride. Coulson’s team thinks they have a safe place to recover, but in reality they revealed the location to Hydra within 15 minutes of finding it…

That’s not much of a hint. Ward was having the hots for Skye back then. Are we supposed to think everyone in love with Skye is secretly a bad guy?

Anyhoo, I have a tiny nitpick. Coulson had to tell May there was a leak in the fuel line so they didn’t have the range they thought. Then at the secret base he has to tell everyone the Bus is out of gas and they’re stuck. How could May not know exactly how much fuel her plane has?

Agent Koening was fun. “Is that a threat?”
“100 percent.”

I looked him up and he’s got a long history with Nick Fury (in comics).

I didn’t think it was a hint so much as an Easter Egg - just as Phil is saying a list of terrible things, the camera pans to Ward. But it might not be the same scene they were referring to in the interview at all.

Depending on how long they were in flight, May might not have noticed the fuel leak from the gauges yet. She knew how much they had at takeoff, and it take a while for her to see that instead of using the expected X pounds of fuel, they had used 2X. Of course, a leak that reduces your flight time from 8 to 4 hours is going to show up pretty quickly.

His role was to get the TV series back on track. We want to see Coulson and his team out there fighting bad guys. But after the situation last week, there was no realistic way that was going to happen. Shield was half-destroyed and Coulson is the senior surviving leader. Under normal circumstances, he was going to spend the next year at the Hub slowly rebuilding Shield and directing its attacks against Hydra.

And we don’t want to watch a show about that. So Talbot’s role was to head that off and give Coulson a reason to get back into the field with his team. We can assume that off camera Talbot showed up and took over the Hub and he’s now doing the administrative work that would have been Coulson’s job. In some future episode, we’ll be told that Shield is back in operation under American military control. Fury, Coulson, and a few others will meanwhile still be around as the unofficial “original” Shield.

I wondered about that myself. Taking the flying car to the base would have been a lot easier than walking. I guess we can assume it was damaged in the Hydra attack or something but it would have been nice if they had at least mentioned it.

Because of the line, “I’m everyone’s type?” I think that means a black hole would have a hard time swallowing his ego.

You forgot:

  1. Major Talbot’s obviously fake moustache.

You have to be on set, Mr. Adrian Pasdar, here take a couple pieces of electrical tape!
