Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D S02E18 The Frenemy of My Enemy

On a different subject, what about May?

From what we’re being shown, she’s become genuinely suspicious of Coulson and is working with Shield 2 to capture him.

But maybe not. Maybe May and Coulson are the equivalent of Simmons and Fitz. One of them was send out into the wilderness while the other pretends to convert to Shield 2 and works on the inside.

I liked the episode, love the show now when before I was only watching it to understand the movies better.

I really am starting to feel bad for Cal. I think he’s got a real tragic character arc and death coming, if they decide to kill him off. His motives aren’t anything really bad. He survived Whitehall taking his wife, his daughter disappearing, he gets the wife back, stitches her back together, she disappears, he finds his daughter, his daughter hates him, he does everything he can to bring them back and now neither of them want him around.

Does anyone else get the sneaky suspicion that it wasn’t Coulson? Maybe someone with 33’s mask?

Um…

In the army base they took care with 33 to make sure her body was covered with a big jacket or loose clothing so you couldn’t see that the only thing matching was the face. Unless she’s wearing a body suit of some kind there’s no way you couldn’t tell 33’s body didn’t match Couslon’s face. But I suppose they could have prepared a body suit.

That was my first thought, as well.

I like that Fitz is getting his confidence back.

I really liked the stuff with Skye and her father. Kyle MacLachlan is great–even when he is calm and happy you really feel like Cal could just erupt into violence at any minute. It’s always just underneath the surface.

I thought the voice box was broken, why was why she had May’s voice even when using other faces? Didn’t the tech explicitly say that back in E14?

Another good point. That was Coulson’s voice, not Kara. So unless they magically fixed that plot point, it’s Coulson.

I can’t see why they’d have 33 impersonating Coulson.

They had apparently got away. I can see that Coulson may have then decided to stay behind so he can talk to the Shield 2 people and convince them that they should be working together.

But what purpose would it serve to leave 33 behind? She’s not going to be able to speak on Couson’s behalf. The people that know Coulson would quickly realize she’s an imposter. And the attempt to fool Shield 2 would just further damage Coulson’s reputation with them.

Meanwhile Coulson would be losing 33, who’s a trained agent, as an asset. And he’d be sending 33, who’s Ward’s minion, into a situation where he can’t keep an eye on her. And putting 33 into a hazardous situation would weaken Coulson’s already shaky alliance with Ward.

The mask’s voice duplicator being broken is a good point, although Coulson could have something from his modern Howling Commandoes kit.

But “the people that know Coulson” is Bobbi. And she’s just been fooled by Simmons. TWICE. I don’t think anyone has to worry about her recognizing an impostor.

That was real Coulson, he was at the end of his rope. He lost Deathlok, Skye got teleported away again. No more cards to play, time to ask for help.

I missed it - is Fury back yet? I figured they have to resurrect him on the show before the Avengers sequel.

Remember what happened when she tried to fool Coulson into thinking she was May? She got caught because she didn’t know May doesn’t like coffee. The same thing would happen if she tried to impersonate Coulson.

Again, they’re dealing with Bobbi. Bobbi got hoodwinked by Gemma, of all people, and knocked out. The very next thing, she’s back to trusting Gemma who mysteriously can’t open Fury’s toolbox. She’s just now starting to suspect that Gemma may be stalling.

Her observational skills are nil. And the rest of SHIELD2 doesn’t even know Coulson. Mack might notice something Lola-related, but that’s about it.

What did I miss?

I still think you’re missing the point. 33 pretending to be Coulson is not the same things as Gemma pretending to be loyal Gemma.

They had the scene where List was telling some offscreen observers that they had captured somebody and that person had died during testing. They showed the body and it was Ethan, who we had seen in the previous episode.

And now I need some Paco’s Tacos! (That’s the restaurant Coulson picked up 33 and Ward) They even had the same woman making tortillas in the corner. Such a great place!

I think it’s actually Coulson turning himself in. But will they prep for the Avenger’s movie? He won’t be able to help Fury because he’s tied up at SHIELD2?

THANK YOU!

Identifying restaurants on shows is a weird hobby of mine. I was just about to ask around on some of the LA history Facebook groups to see if anyone knew this one.

Well, Jeffrey could have had a building manager. Did he have time to explain this to Hailey?

Yeah, that was interesting what Charles said.

Yes, Robert Todd Lincoln is playing a odd and secretive game with Richard.

Not sure what Michael Casper is doing there with Castillo.

Yeah, that’s a cheap TV and movie trope where they see only a few minutes- and it’s always the exact wrong few minutes. Like when a woman fights off the advances of a cad for weeks, but then he grabs one kiss- just as her husband returns home from the war after ten years.

And why does May trust Gonzalez? Gonzalez let Coulson do all the hard lifting, didnt do a thing vs HYDRA (even with all those resources), and then rather than just calling Coulson in for a talk about why Coulson thinks he’s the new Director- lies and infiltrates.

Honestly, the idea of a team is that they trust each other and no one on Coulsons teams trusts anyone- when they are not actively betraying each other. I have pretty well run out of people to root for.

And, as I predicted the “Super Special Butterfly that is Skye” will continue to be the focus of the show.
