Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D S02E15: One Door Closes

“One Door Closes”
Directed by David Solomon
Written by Lauren LeFranc & Rafe Judkins

Great episode last week with the return of Ward. (A non Skye obsessed Ward! I guess the bullet took.) and Agent 33. And the introduction of Edward James Olmos’ Robert Gonzales character. I’m sure we are going to find out whatever became of Hunter, and if Bobbi really is against Coulson, or if there is some triple spying going on! (probably not. But, one can hope.)

Oh, so that’s where they’re going with Bobbi:
looks like she’ll have a reverse change-of-heart from SHIELD2 back to SHIELD1 because Kurt Avecedo has a mad-on to kill all mutants. Er, Inhumans. He’ll convince the others to go gunning after Skye, and Bobbi will flip back to Coulson’s side.

… Also, I don’t think that was exactly what everyone was expecting with “they won’t waste Lucy Lawless on a one-shot appearance; she’ll be back.”
Well, lotsa stuff happened, that’s for sure.

My favorite bit was the hulkprint on the wall.

That was a pretty good ep.

Although, if Skye can splinter trees, Bobbi and Angry are dead.

Glad to see Hunter on Coulson’s side. How did he find him though?

I cheered when Skye cut loose. That’s a usable power. (though not as good as the one the guy who can teleport has, I suppose)

Bobbi isn’t dead, her plot armor keeps her safe. She’s too attractive to be killed that easily. Obviously, Skye made sure to concentrate her blast on the trees and not the people.

Yeah, Skye’s blast was more… attuned to the specific… vibration frequency of trees, and not that of humans. Yeah, that’s the ticket.

Didn’t UAG have a piece of wood sticking out of him as he sat up? I thought he was injured but Bobbi didn’t react to it, may she hadn’t seen yet. And what if Gordon was on the toilet when Skye decided she needed to go home? That would have been embarrassing.

I remained pretty unconvinced by Not-Adama’s conversation with Coulson. It was meandering and seemed mainly based on personalities. So the five folks that decided to reform SHIELD are Gonzalez, Bobbi, Mack, UAG, and the woman from the Academy? Seems like an oddball collection - why did they get buy in from the rest of the organization? And Coulson was looking for him for months? He as a freaking aircraft carrier! He couldn’t have been that hard to find. That whole conversation was poorly written and thought out.

I think Gemma really cares about Skye and is trying to help. She’s going to end up proving it in some important way. BTW, loved the water manipulation scene in Hulk’s Hideaway. That was a nice little aside.

Not sure I liked Coulson escape pod, but it’s a comic book so I shouldn’t really complain. Hunter has found something to commit to, and I think his character has a lot of promise. The meet up at the beach bar was a good way of solidifying that. Why didn’t May leave with Coulson? What can she do captured by SHIELD 2.0? She know’s they’re not evil (no bodies) but she believes they are wrong.

Fitz is really going to have trust issues. First Ward, then Simmons, now Mack have betrayed him personally. Granted, only Ward tried to kill him. Loved Gemma tricking Bobbi and taking her down. I definitely saw that coming, but it was good.

Not sure where they’re going with all the flashback scenes. They didn’t give me any information they couldn’t have given me in a 30 second speech by Mack or Bobbi, but it was nice seeing Lucy Lawless again. I still think she’s going to be revived somewhere along the line, at least for one episode.

Overall, a good episode with some troubling plot holes. Lots of action, could have used less flashback, and a better confrontation between Coulson and Gonzalez. And I’m tired of SHIELD getting taken over. But a few good light moments and lots of plot development.

I’m back everyone!

After recording the whole series I cranked them out this weekend and up until last night (Wow this season has been awesome!) and what reward do I get? A missed first-half and my DVR didn’t record. Ugh.

Can someone inform me on what Blindo mc-teleporty said to Skye and how it corresponded to her water-bending move?

Something like: Hey, you shouldn’t be trying to repress your powers - they’re awesome! Like, every obejct in existence has its own unique vibration patter, and you can, like, tap into that. Don’t wanna go now? OK. But call me when you change your mind. Ciao!

I’m still curious if that’s Gordon’s power or what? Teleporting and force fields are cool enough, but his ability to locate anyone and hear their call is bordering on Heimdall ability. I was a little disappointed when Gordon hugged Skye right before whisking her away. He should have said “I’ll show you the way.” That’s his thing!

Wow, that was quite an intense 40 minutes. Somebody refresh my memory on the eyeless guy, is he a “good guy” or “bad guy?” Although I realize many characters don’t completely fit in either category.

His name is Gordon. We first see him when the obelisk is activated and created Quake/Skye and Spiky Flower Dress (cactus?). IIRC correctly he picks up a phone and calls someone to tell them there are new Inhumans. We next see him in a flashback at the time of his terragenesis where Skye’s mom comforts him and helps him control his powers.

He also bamfs in and transports Flower Dress and Cal (Skye’s Dad) away in times of need. In a scene with Cal he makes it pretty clear that he is really only interested in helping Inhumans and that since Cal isn’t one that Gordon only helped him at the request of nameless others who were now going to talk to Cal.

He appears to genuinely want to help Inhumans deal with their new powers but he also appears to believe they are better, a next step in evolution. Not sure who he works for or why, or if he works for himself. He’s not a fan of SHIELD but it’s because he feels they don’t help Inhumans but instead view them as dangerous and need to be kept locked up.

Yeah, I think he’s a good guy, but with no love for humanity, with good reason. He’s probably a bit like Magneto, concerned mainly with his own kind but he’d probably save children from a burning building.

I think Gordon should really draw some eyes on his face, that would be both hilarious and what I would do

^ Or he should get those “funny glasses” from the party store that have eyes in the lenses.

Hey Lightray,

Since I’m now caught up with the series I am looking at every previous episode’s thread and this is what you said way back in the SECOND episode of this season:

"Given Raina’s comments last season about Skye becoming a monster, and the (comics) connection of the Kree to the Inhumans, I’d speculate that the 084 obelisk is the cinematic version of the Terrigen Mist. In the comics they’re usually released from crystals often depicted of suspiciously similar size to the obelisk.

Non-Inhumans exposed to the Terrigen Mist undergo gruesome and fatal metamorphoses. Inhumans “mutate” (sometimes into monsters) and gain powers. Kree, I think, are unaffected because their genetics are at a dead end, or something."
Way to go man

Is that makeup or CGI on Gordon? A nice pair of shades or a blindfold type thing would be nice. I guess he’s into inHuman pride and all, but it is a little distracting.

Like Liam McPoyle.

I was kind of surprised he didn’t tell Skye that her mother was the one who embraced him after his change.

Or googly eyes!

I don’t think it was the *conversation *that was poorly thought out, but the entire story arc… Gonzalez et all form this new SHIELD, but they somehow don’t tell anyone, so Coulson and nobody he encounters knows they exist… Overlooking the entire aircraft carrier (that presumably went silent and/or off the grid to hide), Coulson had been out looking for lost SHIELD agents for months (including Gonzalez). I guess SHIELD2 wasn’t out looking for old members, or they would have overlapped… or at least someone would have said “hey, they were other SHIELD guys asking me to signup last week”, but no. Even Coulson - would could seemingly locate and kill all of the heads of Hydra in one swift move- couldn’t find them… And regarding Puerto Rico, Gonzalez mentioned that he knew what was going on. Well where was he then?? why was he not helping?? There was some bad shit going down, you’re worried Coulson is compromised, so you do… nothing? And during the flashbacks… Gonzalez was desperately trying to enforce Fury’s order about the sinking the carrier. But later essentially considers Fury a traitor, and his appointed new director doesn’t even get the courtesy of knowing the organization still exists… If he had reached out to Coulson, told him some command structure still exists, and come back into the fold. Would Coulson really have said No? I highly doubt it.

And Fury’s secrecy is what caused SHIELD’s downfall… really? Not that Hydra had been planted inside SHIELD from the very beginning, building their strength, and biding their time…? And Fury’s secrecy about what exactly caused the fall?

Unfortunately, this story arc seems to have been pulled out of the writers asses, as they can’t just focus on the Inhumans/Skye/or whatever is going to lead into Avengers 2. I’m a bit disappointed by this, as the other major story arcs seemed to have been planned from the beginning (Ward/Hydra, Shield downfall) and made a lot more logical sense…
