Ahhh, the joys of Mayfly season...

Late spring/early summer is Mayfly season in southeast Michigan. Mayflies are these insects that look like small dragonflies. They live along the shores of Lake St. Clair, just north of Detroit. The Mayfly larvae eat plants and stuff, and then they pupate into adults. The adults only live for 24 hours; they mate, lay eggs, and then die. And when they die, they die en mass, leaving huge numbers of dead Mayflies all over the place. I work in the area where this happens. Last Wednesday, and again today, I went to the 7-11 to get my morning coffee, and found it thickly encrusted with dead and dying insects. Both times I went ahead and got my coffee (they’re not dangerous, just a gross nuisance). There were fewer Mayflies today than Wednesday, so hopefully they’re almost done for the year.
