Air America (1990 film) is a great popcorn movie

Anyone remember the movie Air America? This movie is just fun. The aerial shots are amazing, right up with Battle of Britain for good aerial shots in older movies. I usually can’t stand Mel Gibson, but he’s decent in this movie. I actually think this movie is probably more like the typical Vietnam experience that the so-called serious Vietnam war movies.

It was vaguely entertaining, but it was horrifyingly disappointing as having been written by Richard Rush, the man who wrote and directed one of the few truly flawless movies of all time, The Stunt Man. (Although nothing compared to the disappointment engendered by his next project, Color of Night.)

“I’m used to being the craziest person in the room, and then I come here, where I’m not even in the top 10!”

It’s not bad.

I liked the flying, of course. It had some laughs, had some action. But overall I came away from it a little disappointed. Could have been better.

I do have it on DVD though.

I watched it with a friend from Laos and I gave her a pretty good ribbing on the Laosian AA batteries.

It’s not bad. It’s been on Starz or HBO or something fairly recently.
