I’m thinking of getting a small, portable air conditioner for my small bachelor apartment. They work by attaching the exhaust pipe to the window and then the cool air goes whatever way you aim the unit. Because I have a bachelor suite, my two budgies are in the same living area as I am. If I had the air conditioner facing away from them, on the opposite side of the large room and set to say, 75 degrees, would it be dangerous for them?
Not at all, as far as I know. I’ve had my budgie, Scout for about 3.5 years now and he’s experienced all kinds of temp variations. As long as it’s above 70 and the air isn’t blowing directly at him, he’ll be fine. Enjoy!
The rule of thumb is, no draft on their sleeping place.
That said, we used a room air conditioner with an exhaust pipe to the window – sounds exactly like yours – for about 3 years in our birdroom because we also had a chinchilla. Cool temps are a requirement for chins. We kept it between 65 and 70 usually, although sometimes it dipped lower or bobbed higher as the outside temp changed on us and the thermostat struggled to chase it. Our birds – cockatiels and budgies – did fine.
One caveat: our machine filled its internal water condensation tray pretty quickly, and the solution was to run the hose out to a larger external tray. If you do that, COVER the external tray securely so as not to create a drowning hazard. We used a 10-gallon aquarium with a top that we could fix in place securely (with a hole cut for the hose).
Thank you for the replies. I think I’ll likely go ahead and purchase one.
