I am listening to classic music right now, “Ride of the Valkries”,“Ode to Joy”,“William Tell Overture”," Tocata and Fugue in D minor",“Ave Maria”, “Bethovens 5th”, “Fur Elsie”,“Moonlight Sonata” and others. I have been typing while listening, but I find myself taking numerous breaks to air conduct an imaginary symphony. I have absolutely NO clue how to conduct, but I am doing it anyway. I am aslo frequently in tears, this music is just so damn beautiful! Does anyone else out there do the same thing?
I’ve been known to play the air guitar and organ. I also use the air mike on occasion.
Oh yea. Except I actually know how to conduct, a little. I know the patterns. good music needs to be conducted. I even air conduct when I’m humming a particlularly exciting piece absently. I think its a classsical music thing.i have no urge to conduct pop, or even show tunes, but good classical needs it.
Tears, yes. Air conduct, no, although I do tend to hum along the 'cello part. Does that make me a geek? You may want to listen to Samuel Barber’s Adagio for Strings and the second movement from Gustav Mahler’s 5th Symphony, if you’re not already familiar with them.
As for conducting, start with bouncing an imaginary basketball with your right hand. A rebound at the bottom, right? Bounce in the center of your body, with the bottom point being about your belly button, the top being eyes. That belly button point is called the ictus. Keep a nice steady beat with the ictus hitting on the beat. Now. For four beats per measure, you go down, left, right, up, hitting the ictus each time. You ricochet back a little bit (rebound) from each beat in the opposite direction from where you are going next (if you don’t get this part, don’t sweat it). Don’t be limp wristed on this; the orchestra will not know where the beats are. Wrist and arm must be one with hand in a light cup shape: point of the beat is at the tip of your fingers. For three beats, down, right, up. For two, just down, up. First beat of a measure is always down, last beat of a measure is always up.
So there’s conducting in a nutshell, more or less. Violins are to your left, 'celli and bass to your right, winds straight in front of you, percussion way in the back.
Nice primer, 'cellist. Should we ruin weirddave’s fun with changing time signatures?
And if you’re listening to the jazz number “Take Five,” you indicate the fifth beat by a nod of the head.
Ooo… you’re so mean, Balance.
Lets.
I definitely air conduct. I also sing along under my breath (I get enough strange looks with the air conducting) if it’s a choral piece and I know the text. I even air conduct and sing to the 4th movement of Beethoven’s Ninth while watching “A Clockwork Orange.”
I’ll air conduct to Hungarian Dance #5 and Russian Sailor Dance.
'Cellist, I played Cello as well in High School. I was first chair… and last chair. Too bad that Orchestra folded after my sophomore year due to lack of interest. We had so much fun.
There I’ve got it at last.
Proof!
Weirddave
Don’t worry it’ll be just fine, no really they are very very nice people just hold their hands and all your problems will be over.
Aw shucks c’mon you’re not gonna make this hard for us are ya?
Ok then, when I nod my head folks…
