Do you "conduct" classical music whenl istening?

I am among a number of people I know who will just start moving their hands with certain pieces as if conducting the music. Do you do this? Have you ever been caught doing it in pbulic or just in a car, around family, etc.?

You’ve obviously never hung around music students who are all in conducting class that semester. They conduct everywhere, even when there isn’t any music!

But no, I don’t.

I do. It’s kind of involuntary and half the time I don’t even notice that I’m doing it.

For me, it’s the same as playing air drums, keyboard or guitar when listening to rock or jazz. I’ve also been known to pick up a tune or two on air flute.

Wait…you mean there are people that don’t do that?

You ain’t the Lone Ranger, Curious. To me, “conducting” classical music is like tapping my foot to jazz (or playing air drums). But then, I carry on conversations with people who aren’t there, too.

I do that too. It’s hard to sit still at classical music concerts.

Having an absolute huge passion for music, I can totally relate to what you’re saying. I do love classical music… having learnt to play since I was 8 years old. Although I must admit I don’t “conduct” as such… I just move to the various feelings and emotions that a classical piece of music can evolve into and out of. I guess with classical music I imagine myself sitting at the piano and actually playing the piece of music that I’m listening to.

As far as more modern, contemporary/rock styles of music go - yes I also move, tap my foot, play air drums, pound on an imaginery keyboard… whatever.

I believe that music (whatever style) is a pure expression of human emotions in its most basic form… and for people not to respond to it in some kind of physical way would be a sad thing. I think pretty well everyone does respond to music both emotionally and physically.

… ummm did I make any sense?.. Hope so! :o

yes, yes I do

Absolutely. Although occasionally I will surrender my baton in order to do some righteous air-drumming.

Yeah, I do it. I’ll conduct to classical music, pop, and television theme shows. All those years of band and majoring in music education got to me.

Yes. I’m a geek.

I do too. I try not to in public but many times have done so without realizing. At home, however, I “conduct” as much as I want and with great passion.

What TheOnlySaneOne said. You mean there are people who don’t?

You should see my 'Va Pensiero"

I just found myself doing this five minutes ago, while listening to the third movement of Tchaikovsky’s Sixth Symphony.

I generally sit still when listening to music, especially when around other people. I may occasionally tap my foot or move my head slightly to the beat, but that’s as far as it goes.

I do unless I’m actually singing it. In the car, at home, at concerts.

In contrast to Ginger, I don’t generally when listening to classical music, but sometimes find myself doing it when singing, particularly if I’m having trouble finding the rythym of the piece.

I behave myself when other people are in the car or office with me, but otherwise, I conduct, whistle, sing, harmonize (though not all at the same time). I sit still when in the concert hall listening, but I’ve been known to move a fair amount when performing.

I had to break the habit, because otherwise I’d do it when I perform. But my internal metronome is always on. I like my music to have a heartbeat - a really vital sense of motion.
