Doesn’t anybody with any sense of history think about these things? Mein gott. What’s next, “Arbeit Macht Frei”, the official slogan of Leavenworth?
I’m not much for criticism of my service, but come ON! This is a bit ridiculous, and even without the historical appreciation it’s a bit lame compared to “Aim High”, wouldn’t you agree? I think so, anyway.
Combine this with the wierd comeback of the term “Homeland,” and the odd habit rightwing talk types have of using the word “Folk” in a singularly non-English-standard way, and you have a thoroughly substantiated conspiracy theory on your hands.
It sounds like there’s been quite a few changes since I was in the USAF, (1971-1975.) On my re-enlistment physical (of all things) they found a pretty serious heart defect, making me an involuntary first-termer.
Holy shit. I just had to click on this to check it wasn’t Airman saying that. Didn’t seem like him, so it’s a relief.
It’s a shame to see Australian Defence Force ads going back to this sort of claptrap too. I miss the days when the RAN had the best ever (IMHO) recruitment slogan ever, working on multiple levels, and not offensive to either left, right, or anybody else:
I know you meant this in jest, and I don’t hold it against you or anything, but please bear in mind that my wife is Jewish, and by extension my son (since the Jewish ethnicity is considered matrilinear), so that sort of implication makes me VERY uncomfortable. This is one of the reasons that it so disturbed me that I felt the need to start a thread criticizing it.
Are you aware that the Deutschlandlied (often known as “Deutschland Ueber Alles”) is not a Nazi anthem? Are you aware that it has been the German national anthem since the days of the Weimar Republic, long before the Nazis took power? Are you aware that it is still the German national anthem? Are you aware that that refrain “Deutschland Ueber Alles” doesn’t refer to German domination?
As far as pittings go, this ranks as one of the lamest and most ill-informed.
