"Akira"—How much damage could the SOL do?

I was just wondering…In the movie Akira—or the original Manga, I guess—how much damage did the SOL orbital laser do to a ground target (well, a normal ground target, at least)? It left a bit of a crater, as I recall, but I can’t remember how how big or how deep it was.

And…I found this picture, which shows the beam at at least the width of the playing field in an olympic stadium—but could it get any wider?

Are there any floorplans or schematics for the SOL online? It was always one of my favorite things in the movie. Why’s it up there!? What’s it all about?

I wish…The most I’ve ever been able to find is a page with this Lego model. (Which, in all fairness, is a very good Lego model.)

'Sucker in the movie would had to have been huge.
