Akwesasne border crossing

The Mowhawk Council of Akwesasne closed the border as of today:

I have no beef either way - I am wondering, though, and I cannot find any reference whatsoever to this - are the guards on the US side of the reserve (the St. Regis Mohawk Reservation) armed? If so, why is it bad that Canadian guards are armed?

It appears that the U.S. side of the border crossing in question is not on Akwesasne land. For the most part, the tribe’s land straddles the St. Lawrence River, but at the point of the crossing (the Three Nations Crossing bridge), they only have rights over the Canadian side of the river. See this map of Akwesasne lands (PDF) for details; the border crossing is on the major road that crosses Cornwall Island (marked in yellow).

Makes sense - tks.

An additional tidbit that may or may not have anything to do with what’s going on there: Most of the online poker sites around the world have their servers on the Akwesasne reservation.
