Al Gore on SNL tonight!

I laughed through most of the show, probably the first time in years.
Gore was great, but that Charlie Brown thing with the golden calf had me in tears.

Would people stop alluding to things and just describe them? I’m in Australia! I’m never going to see this! But I’m curious about politicians doing comedy.

That was great. I was surprised at how vicious Gore was willing to be toward Lott. I don’t expect we’ll hear the end of that one soon.

The bit about choosing a running mate was hilarious, too. “We could put the savings into some sort of hypothetical…lockbox.”

As for Phish, of course they were great. “46 Days” is far from my favorite song on the new album, but it is probably the best one that isn’t 8 or 9 minutes long. It’s great to hear “Chalk Dust Torture” again, too.

If some enterprising Phish fans are smart, they’re going through their video captures of the show right now to get the screen shot with the cartoon Phish and the Peanuts kids dancing around so they can get it onto a T-shirt in time for the New Year’s run.

Dr. J

I was so happy to hear “Chalkdust.” Such a fun song:) Was that little baby girl a Fishman offspring? Very cute. I was cracking up at the Peanuts twin girls whirly dancing to “YEM”, and Shermey dancing in the hot tub.

My uncle Mike is pretty good friends with the Gores, so I was not surprised at how funny they were. I’ve had a bit of a crush on Al since I spotted him at a Dead show in '92.

Well, that was hilarious. The best show in a very long time, from start to finish. The VP-as-Bachelor thing was priceless, and it was great to see Al Franken again…I wonder how that came about?

Franken used to write speeches for Gore, believe it or not. He’s probably the one who talked him into the hole thing.

Looks like it might be another week before the Gore reviews appear. Last night’s was very funny. Gore’s wife, Tipper, was also in a couple of spots.

I had to work during it last night so I’m watching it now… I’m a Rightwing Republican, just to the left of Bircher & I gotta say this is terrific. Btw, I TOTALLY DID NOT REALIZE THAT WAS GORE AS LOTT!!!
(yeah, it was vicious but I’ll say Lott almost earned it)

right now is Phish’s first number- I don’t think I’ve ever heard one before- I like this

Eagerly awaiting the Rober Smiegel cartoon!

Yeah, that was the best SNL I’ve seen in a long time. Not surprised, though. I’ve always figured that the Gores were a funny bunch. And I’ve always thought of Al as a good sport.

I liked the Willy Wonka sketch. It’s about time someone called Willy Wonka on his irresponsible behavior!

My husband, however, is still mad at Tipper about the whole PMRC thing. I think he envisions her as having devil horns or something. During the Stuart Smalley sketch, he said “That’s Tipper???” I said, yeah, of course, wondering how he couldn’t know that. But I guess he has always hated her so much he hasn’t really seen her. Or had only seen her wearing a political-wife suit, so he was surprised to see her in a black leather jacket. He spent the whole sketch muttering “so that’s what Tipper Gore looks like?” I think he has a crush on her now.

I’ll bet he was thinking of her more as a frumpy housewife, given the PMRC stuff.

But I’ll give the show a thumbs up. Gore did a good job. It’s interesting that the two best episodes this year have been Gore and McCain. Maybe they’ll run together on the SNL ticket in 2004.

I loved the last scene, where they’re dressed up as toys. That was so adorable! “I wish it were Christmas to-day…” Was the guy in the scarf supposed to be Harry Potter? Chris Kattan was pretty hot as G.I.Joe…

I thought Al was pretty funny.

SNLs of recent memory have been pretty bland.

That being said, last night’s show was GOOD! I gained a new respect for Algore. He has been taking his criticism well and seems to have developed not only a personality, but he can now laugh at himself.

My wife and I were impressed with the Bachelor takeoff, with the Willy Wonka sketch, and with his overall performance. The Al Franken sketch seemed to drag, and neither of us realized that Trent Lott was Algore!

cadolphin was laughing so hard, it actually triggered an asthma attack and I had to find her inhaler! Twice!

Al gets a thumbs-up from this right-wing Republican. He was very witty.

I thought it was excellent! And the pic of fat Al after the election…

Anyone else notice that it really WAS Brad Pitt on the cartoon?

That was a pretty damn funny SNL, and Al and Tipper both seem to have a flair for improvisational comedy. I don’t know if Tipper’s still involved with the PMRC, but it appears (this from http://cnn.com) that Al is not going to run for president in 2004.

Since I’m a trivia nut and political junkie, I was curious as to which other people have run for the presidency and hosted SNL, not necessarily in that order. I researched it a bit and came up with the following list:

Ralph Nader - hosted 1/15/77
Green party nominee for pres. in 1996 and 2000

George McGovern - hosted 4/14/84
Dem. nominee for pres. in 1972, Dem. candidate in 1984

Jesse Jackson - hosted 10/20/84
Dem. candidate in 1984 and 1988

Steve Forbes - hosted 4/13/96
GOP candidate in 1996 and 2000

John McCain - hosted 10/19/02
GOP candidate in 2000

Al Gore - hosted 12/14/02
Dem. candidate in 1988 and nominee in 2000
An interesting aside: none of these politicos succeeded in winning the presidency (although McGovern, McCain, and Gore successfully won seats in the house and the senate, and Gore was twice elected V.P.). Wonder if a sense of humor is detrimental to your chances of winning?

Rudy Guiliani was on SNL and he was damned funny. I think Al Gore is trying to follow Nixon’s footsteps. Nixon lost the election, went on Laugh-in and then got elected. He was good on the daily show, why not SNL?

Gore just announced he won’t seek the 2004 nomination. He’s out.

It would have been astonishingly cool to announce that on SNL last night instead of waiting for 60 Minutes.

I’ve found that often (but not always) non-professional actor/comedians are quite good on SNL - The George Steinbrenner episode is a favorite of mine, for example, as is the Steve Forbes one. I think it’s the whole ‘poking fun at yourself’ thing.

Bob Dole epitomizes that phenomenon.
