What did you think of it?
I was glad to start hearing details again.
This “character” and “family values” theme of Bush’s seems like just another cover to put money into the pockets of the rich.
I was glad Gore pointed out how the Republicans put an honest name, “Repeal the Marriage Penalty” on a scheme that’s really “Let the Rich Get $100 for every Dime the Middle Class Gets”.
They always seem to put phoney names on bills so it looks hard to vote against. I’m glad someone’s calling them on that.
And you think Democrats don’t? How about “Pro-choice” can be spun around to mean “Pro-death”? Or how maybe “Gun Control” can also mean “Populace Subjugation”?
Al Gore’s speech: Reminded me more of Jay Leno’s opening monologue each night. Has politics degraded to the point of standup comedians now?
We need someone new. We need someone honest. We need someone… like me.
Vote Diddly in '00! I vow to encase all annoying members of PETA in thick, gooey caramel, I promise to march thousands of my battledroid troops across the country to hoold America in an iron fist, I swear that I’ll execute the makers of those damn Old Navy commercials, and I will bring about a total eradication of Zima!
How’s THAT for a candidate? Like I said, I’m honest. (Oh, yeah, and I’ll make sure the interns I screw around with will be attractive).
The speech was effective to the extent that it mollified the liberal wing of the Democratic party. Ralph Nader is now a complete nonfactor. Liberals will stay loyal to the Democrats. and Ralphie will fade into well-deserved oblivion.
As for the speech itself? It was lame, boring and said nothing new- kinda like George W.'s speech a few weeks before.
Still, form a cynical, practical point of view, I’d say George and Al BOTH achieved what they wanted to in their speeches. George didn’t look like a bonehead (the label he has to fight) and thanks to “the kiss,” Al didn’t look like a total stiff (the image he’s had to fight).
The kiss, of course, was a fraud. I don’t mean to pick on AL specifically- truth is, we all know that NO politician EVER does ANYTHING spontaneously, least of all at a convention. And Al Gore NEVER does anything without checking with with 20 pollsters how it will fly. Trust me, the kiss was tested, marketed and planned- and it seems to have done him some tangible good in the polls.
I found the kiss pretty disgusting!
Other than that, regarding the content of the speech… does anybody believe politicains say anything directly as they believe it? It is pure and simple marketing, like selling soap. And I pay about as much attention.
