Alabama drags education back to pre-1861 days

Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey on Wednesday signed legislation that would ban diversity, equity and inclusion programs at public schools, universities and state agencies and prohibit the teaching of “divisive concepts” including that someone should feel guilty because of their race or gender.

Technically it is legislation through pursestrings banning DEI programs from any program receiving state funds, so you know, any public K-12 or college. When I saw this on my feed, I seriously thought it was from The Onion. No … it’s fucking real.

Governor Kay Ivey said "“My administration has and will continue to value Alabama’s rich diversity, however, I refuse to allow a few bad actors on college campuses – or wherever else for that matter – to go under the acronym of DEI, using taxpayer funds, to push their liberal political movement counter to what the majority of Alabamians believe.” So Alabamans, your own governor called you all out as racist fucks. The reasoning that the lawmakers gave was that inclusion is a “divisive concept”. You can’t make this shit up.

And what does the Alabama have in store next? A bill coming up that prevents teachers from talking about sexual orientation and gender identity. And in a gigantic Fuck You teachers all thinking you have 1st Amendment rights and shit, he bill would also ban pride flags in a classroom.

Which they’re proud to be.

Wonder if that runs afoul of NCAA rules and regulations.

If you want to hit Southerners where it really hurts them, fuck with their college football teams. They’ll get the message immediately. It’s the only thing they all actually care about.

Has the NCAA ever took a principled stand?

Profit!!

Sounds almost identical to Florida’s garbage interpretation of DEI. No surprise they’re passing notes.

So they only took education in Alabama back 4 or 5 years. If that much.

How does that work when you only go as far a the third grade?

Principle, not principal.

Careful! Alabama might try to sue you for edumacatin’ people beyond their allowed scope. /s

Free to Be You and Me came out in 1972 and was all about DEI, so taking us back at least that far.

I meant they were only going back 4 or 5 years to return to the 1861 standards.

Ah. Got it.

Do they still offer AP courses in skinning gators for food?

I agree. No one shoudl feel guilty because of an accident of birth. The rest is racist crap.

“DEI”?

Diversity, equity and inclusion programs.

See the OP, it’s in the quote.

If someone is dumb enough to think schools are teaching white children that they should feel guilty for being white, then I guess they’re dumb enough to not know what DEI stands for.

They probably think it means Democrats Equal Indoctrination.

I mean, it’s spelled out in the OP’s quote and then abbreviated in the OP’s text. I don’t want to bring down the wrath of ILYV1, but I really thought it was sufficiently explained in this thread.

Of course, I remember listening to the Michael Jackson song PYT and thinking, hey, I wonder what PYT stands for, then listening closer to the lyrics. (For DrDeth’s benefit, “I want to love you, PYT, pretty young thing” are the lyrics. PYT is short for Pretty Young Thing in that song. The song I mention that’s by Michael Jackson)

The problem is when a teacher says “White people benefitted from the Jim Crow system” oe “slavery was really bad for slaves and many white people grew rich off the system”. some white people today interpret that as “making white people feel guilty”.
