Alabama Shoots its goddamn self in the foot again. Fuck this place.

Well, the less time the spend discussing evolution, the more time for banjo practice.

*sub]Sorry OGRE; I couldn’t help myself[/sub]

Ogre,

Yeah, wish we could. But would it really get through to anyone? If people believe evidence selectively that’s their perogative and you can’t really argue with them.

Banjo Practice
WARNINGEnjoying yourself is a controversial activity some people…

kellymccauley: So who’s Judge Moore? Let’s see if we can get that vein throbing in Ogre’s forehead again.

Well you beat me to it, but I was actually thinking “Talibama”.

Alabama’s position on education and evolution is itself proof of its position.

awwwwwwww now…don’t be to hard on Alabama…after all a tornado did blow through there a couple of months ago…it did $2,000,000,000 worth of improvements

Dammit! I was gonna say Talibama!

I’m currently doing a search on Judge Moore now…could be good for a laugh. Or some Primal Screaming.

Roy Moore is the judge who put the Ten Commandments up in his courtroom, and also had specifically Christian prayer at the beginning of his session every morning.

He was recently elected Chief Justice of the state Supreme Court. One of the first things he did was erect an enormous Ten Commandments plaque in front of the SC building in Montgomery.

::Head fucking explodes::

What’s this bloody shrapnel all over the walls???

Oh, it’s just pieces of Ogre’s head.
I moved my Yankee ass down here to Alabama 6 years ago. I like it, it’s a nice place to live. Of course, I’m also in the somewhat progressive-thinking Huntsville area. Hell, it was one of the few places in the state where they voted in favor of a lottery.

It really pains me to see shit like this happen in the beginnings of the 21st century. I’m certainly not surprised, judging by the vast numbers of those fucking car emblems that have the “truth” fish eating the Darwin fish.

Alabama’s position on evolution is a good argument against evolution itself.

All I can say is that I’m glad I don’t have kids if this is what gets taught in school.

Is there a chance that the Board of Ediots who pushed this through could suffer the same fate as the anti-evolution crusaders in Kansas?
“At a 1995 board meeting to approve the original disclaimer, then-Gov. Fob James impersonated an ape to poke fun at Charles Darwin, whose works are the basis of evolutionary theory.”

This couldn’t have required much effort on Fob James’ part.

For some strange reason, this thread has stirred the fond memory of Steve Windham pissing in a jug behind a podium during a filibuster in the Alabama State Senate.

A quick Google search (I really like the way search engines have evol…OOPS! sorry, what was I thinking?) revealed two interesting sites. They discuss, among other stellar highlights, Judge Roy Moore, and the Jug Incident:

http://www.gulfcoastcommunities.com/main/type/aboutalabama/

OK, disclaimer on the Freeweb site: I don’t necessarily agree with a few of the person’s editorial generalizations about Alabama, but the news articles seem legitimate.

[sub]must read fully before posting…brain not evolving properly…gahhhh[/sub]

Well, Dopers, what are you all going to do about the apathy of “Evolutionists=God Haters”, besides mock those who have this view? It might be silly notion to you, but it is a serious enough notion for many of the faithful to reject the theory out of hand. I ought to know, I used to have this view as well. Mocking does not work, never work, when it comes to changing minds.

Alabama could buy newer textbooks that discarded the old theories for newer, better ones, instead of wasting money slapping on stickers.

Oh, BTW, fundamentalist Christians are not even the most virulent opponents of the theories of evolution. Many Muslims are much, much more apathetic to the theories of evolution, it being a Western ‘secular’ idea being another reason alongside that “Evolution=Atheism” notion.

capacitor: Many Muslims are much, much more apathetic to the theories of evolution…

I don’t think that word means what I think you think it does.

Well, I was going to say something about all the sweeping anti-Alabama remarks being made here, but then I remembered:

I didn’t grow up in Alabama.
I grew up in Birmingham.

Carry on!

And, sadly, in cases like this, neither does education.

So was I, so was I.

How about Talibamaban? Or would that be stretching it too far?
