Alabama Shoots its goddamn self in the foot again. Fuck this place.

You’re right, Kimstu. I didn’t mean to say that many Muslims are more indifferent to the theories of evolution; I meant to say they are more hostile to the theories of evolution.

Dire Wolf, I live in the same neck of the woods.

I once had a letter to the Huntsville times published. I wanted everone who voted against the lottery to move to Mississippi, that way, the average IQ of both states would go up!

Well, yes, you could say there are more virulent opponents of the Theory of Evolution than fundamentalist Christians. But I could see why and American (or western European) who belived in evolution might, for some strange, inexplicable reason, focus on that main opponent of evolution in his own society. What’s your point?

And, I thought the post was about Alabama getting new text book, which they decided to put the old stickers on.

Ummm…it seems to me unless they want to get rid of the “old” theory of evolution, for the “new better” theory of creationism, they’re going to keep stickering.

I find evolution to be a satisfactory explantion of all of the evidence we have about how life in its present forms got here. I also love God. These are not inconsistent positions. It is my understanding that the Catholic Church has accepted evolution, although I am not a Catholic.

It is my belief that the “anti-evolutionists” are not at all concerned about the most satisfactory scientific explanation of the evidence, but rather are focused on using the state to proselytize their own religious views which were formed as a result of a refusal to think and a desire to feel superior to those people who do think.

Well, evolution IS only a theory. I don’t have any particular love for the idea of evolution…it simply happens to currently be the most scientifically valid explaination for human existence. If anyone can formulate a more valid theory and defend it properly, then I will follow that theory at that point! That said, don’t even waste your time with creationism, especially of the young-earth variety. The evidence is well beyond a shadow of a doubt that the earth is more than 7,000 years old.

Maybe there should be a 2nd Scopes Monkey Trial, Alabama, circa 2002 :). Ahh, for once my * Inherit the Wind* (a great movie I’d recommend to anyone, btw!) seems to fit into a discussion.

Odd, I rather found even the Islamists less uptight about evolutionary theory than your average Fundie Xtian. Where are you deriving this from? It may be there’s a bunch out there, but my general sense is the the Theory of Evolution is not a big bugaboo for most Muslims, even the conservative ones.

sits back and waits patiently for Fenris to come in and make up a parody of Sweet Home Alabama.

Please, God (he says, pushing the very limits of irony,) don’t.

I want every single one of you guys to come to Montgomery. I’ll find you a place to stay. We’ll drink beer on the capitol steps and spit it in Don Siegelman’s eye. I’ll place a copy of The Origin of Species squarely on the bronze star where Jefferson Davis took office as President of the Confederacy. We’ll take 20 pound sledge hammers to Judge Moore’s Ten Commandments memorial.

Who’s with me?

Oh, my poor, benighted homeland. When will you join the rest of the world? I want the whole world to know how wonderful you can be. I want you to take your rightful place as the jewel of the South. The birthplace of Civil Rights. The crucible of a united nation.

C’mon, guys. I’ll take everyone out for barbeque the likes you’ve never tasted and beer and dancing and fun and…and…and…

Fuck.

:frowning:

Would we have to bring our own 20 pound sledgehammers?

Only 20 pounds? No offense, Ogre, but I want something I’ll have to use more than three fingers to wield:)

Or just gimme two. Forties. I need a decent warm-up for my workout.

I can be there in 2 days - if I’m nuts! How about everyone else?

Why not just come to Bamadope?

One of my best and longest friends (22 years) lives near Montgomery.
He says in his daughters school (she’s 8) they say prayers out loud.
This is a public school.
Is that legal?

In theory, no. Absolutely not, if the teacher is leading them.

NWES FLASH:
Praying in school, even teacher lead prayer, is quite common in the USA. IT’s illegal, but difficult to stop.

Have her record it via audiotape. Presto chango, you’ve got evidence.

punha: I think its okay with him that she says prayers in school. Doubt if he’ll video tape it or anything.

Hey, Ogre: y’know what? If we took Boulder, CO and somehow managed to breed it with Alabama, we’d have something approaching normalcy!

Fenris

That’s one possibility. However, Mr. Spock tells me that there is a 23.2343685% chance of tearing the space/time continuum and allowing the Universe of Fundy Jack Dean Tylers to overrun our own.

I don’t think we should risk it.
