Alberta? Saskatchewan? You folks okay?

Hope everybody has made (or is making) it through the blizzard with minimal problems. Heavy wet snow falling since yesterday here, probably at least eight inches on the ground this morning; sloppy conditions, winds, and more snow and rain.

I actually got all the way to work today, only to find that all of the downtown area was without power–traffic signals weren’t working, and our office building was totally without power. Not wanting to climb the stairs to the top floor in pitch blackness (for some reason, even the building’s emergency lights are out), I came home. I’ll phone in later to see if the power is on and the office is open; but for now, I’m safe at home.

If you’re dealing with this blizzard, how are you holding up?

Ewwwwww. I was watching the news this morning and they showed the weather system - storm was headed east, then as soon as it hit the SK border, it did a 90 degree turn north, which was kinda funny. It was like, OMG Moose Jaw, and ran away.

Calgary didn’t get anything, thank goodness! But my in-laws in Strathmore (40 km east of Calgary) got 46 cm overnight.

Bunch of precipitation over the past couple days here, but we’re sitting at +5 so none of it’s white.

We had huge windstorms on Friday (Mrs. Piper was storm-stayed in S’toon because the Mounties closed the highway because of low visibility due to dust), then yesterday we had torrential rains, on and off, most of the day. Now it’s just cold, damp and gusty - no snow.

A snow day in April? that’s Canada! hope you get to relax a bit, Spoons!

Well, who can blame it?

ETA: And today we’re having what must be close to a wind storm here, too. Crazy, crazy spring.

It is superbly beautiful here in Bancroft.

Dunno about tomorrow, though.

The constant power flickers erased my PVR. Well sort of erased it. It doesn’t list any of the recorded programs, but still says we only have 10 percent memory left.

That was the only casualty in my house.

We had power out for an hour and a half with that storm last Thursday - it deleted all our recorded programmes. I discovered today that for some reason, the clock was incorrect on the DVR now, so we haven’t recorded anything properly since then. Oh well. Oh, wait, the clock was off by…about an hour and a half! Mystery solved!

It’s the nicest day we’ve had in weeks here in Victoria. (Hmm - it would seem I’ve been here long enough that I’ve developed the local habit of taunting the rest of the country about the weather…)

Hoping you prairie dogs are staying warm and dry…

Oh, go count your daffodils!

I can’t - they’re past already. I have to go cut some asparagus for supper…

I did. Had a nice, relaxing day–until the snow stopped and I went out to shovel. Man, that stuff was heavy!

Speaking of torrential rains, when do the underpasses flood? My mom sent me an email saying the Leader-Post said the underpasses were flooded, but all week they’ve been fine for me. But I really don’t want to get caught in one because I have a super-low car.

Follow-up:

One of the oddities of life in Alberta–we can have a blizzard that shuts down the city on Wednesday; and on the following Saturday, I can be out playing golf. Which I did today–the weather was so nice that I didn’t even need any kind of coat. Not a speck of snow left on the course, and it was in pretty good shape. I had a great round too!

Spoons, the correct approach to a snowfall in April is to rely on our friend the Sun to do some snow removal in a few days, not bust your back!

True, but the area I shovelled is typically in shadow this time of year. Even today, there are still a few lumps of snow left on the lawn. Though with today’s temps (~20C), they’ll probably be gone by this evening.

Wow, you guys even get snow in metric? How . . . foreign.

Hey, hope it melts soon for you.

Tris

Officially, we got 20 cm. Unofficially, we got 8 inches. Even more unofficially, and thanks to the winds, I shovelled a foot of the stuff.

With all due respect to our Francophones, I’d suggest that Canada is officially bilingual in more than one way: we’ll use Imperial and Metric measurements as we please.

Sigh - what a lovely weekend - the perfect temperature and sunny all weekend long. I hope it rains now, though - it’s still terribly dry here.
