I meantSwinging. I don’t think I’d like that other song at all.
-
Hail to the Thief - Radiohead
-
Was going to say Yoshimi Battles. . .by Flaming Lips, but apparently that was last year.
-
Was there a Vinnie Vincent release this year?
- Earthquake Glue - Guided By Voices. This is the best thing Pollard has done since Alien Lanes and Bee Thousand. I don’t know why it hasn’t gotten any attention. Maybe people are jaded by GBV’s prodigious output. But if you haven’t heard it and you like the rock and roll, it’s a must!
2 Hail to the Thief - Radiohead. This one has really grown on me. I think hearing the songs live helped me assimilate it.
I hated, hated, hated the Mars Volta record, BTW. Pretentious Emerson Lake and Palmer-level wank rock. Ick.
I almost ranted about that earlier this year.
Seriously? You’d even rate it above Under The Bushes, Under The Stars? I love Earthquake Glue, it’s in second place on my list, but IMHO it doesn’t hold a candle to UTBUTS.
On a related note, I just ordered the Hardcore UFO’s boxset.
Fuuuck, I’m so broke…
Surprisingly enough…
The Ataris - So Long, Astoria
Fantastic disc, and much stronger than their “Boys of Summer” remake would suggest. Can’t recommend it enough.
Yeah, Husker, I liked it a LOT better than Under the Bushes…. I would rank my favorite GBV albums thusly:
- Alien Lanes
- Bee Thousand
- Vampire on Titus
- Earthquake Glue
Gotta disagree with Songs For The Deaf. It has to be one of the most lifeless albums I’ve ever heard. The songs could’ve been good, but the guitars and vocals are so weak and smooth on most of the tracks that it ruins the entire experience. Doesn’t help that their last effort ® was so incredibly kick-ass.
I know! Isn’t it great?!?!
Gotta put in a vote for Led Zeppelin’s How the West was Won
I can’t recommend it enough
Neko Case does indeed have an amazing voice, and Blacklisted is a great album, but it was a 2002 release (I bought it the day after Christmas).
I’m confused by your comments on Songs for the Deaf, cheddarsnax. Are you saying you don’t like it because there’s not enough distortion pedal?
My word no one has even mentioned Fever To Tell simply a fantastic album and I second the White Stripes Elephant and Red Hot Chili Peppers Greatest Hits
Well then. I guess I just assumed that, because Go With the Flow was in the running, than the rest of the album was as well.
Well, sadly, I haven’t had a chance to pick up the new Outkast or Rancid but my vote for album of the year would definitely go to 311’s Evolver.
(Which may once again prove my theory that I am the only 311 fan on this board.)
You’ve got a second 311 fan right here. But I haven’t picked up Evolver yet. Another CD goes on the list of ones to pick up.
- Evanescence - Fallen
- Iron Maiden - Dance of Death
And as an alltime, the gladiator soundtrack just blows me away.

Here’s part of a review that perfectly expresses my feelings about the album:
“[The production] compresses and flattens every instrument as if it were coming out of a cheap AM car radio … Deaf winds up being entirely too evenhanded and samey, since every guitar has the same beefy, mid-range, no-treble tone and Dave Grohl (aka the Most Powerful Drummer in the Universe) is pushed to the background, never sounding loud, never giving this music the muscle it needs … it becomes tiring to listen to – too much at the same frequency, all hitting the ear in a way that doesn’t result in blissful submission, just numbness undercut with a desire to have some texture in this album.”
There’s a reason for that.
-
Broken Social Scene (yes, it was officially released last year, but it was given a major release this year so it will be eligible for AotY.)
-
The Wrens: The Meadowlands
-
Elephant
-
The Notwist: Neon Golden
-
Speakerboxxx/The Love Below (go out and buy this record, Outkast will need the money if Rosa Parks has anything to say about it)
-
The Pernice Brothers: Your’s Mine and Our’s
-
Up in Flames
-
Hearts Of Oak: Ted Leo & The Pharmacists
-
Hail to the Thief
-
Basement Jaxx: Kish Kash
Must be a difference in our equalizers. I thought Dave’s drums - and I agree he’s probably the best rock drummer currently playing - are outstanding on that disc, certainly not pushed to the background.
Prefuse 73: One word extinguisher
Calexico: Feast of Wire
Books: The Lemon of Pink
Would be some nominees off the top of my head. But I really stopped by to say wtf with Outkast? I really don’t get why people rave about their albums. I like a lot of hip-hop, and Outkast always has three absolutely amazing singles on each album, along with a lot of filler and about twenty minutes of blabber that doesn’t really even qualify as “skits,” which are always the worst part of hip-hop albums anyway. Oh, well.
