Alex Jones lawyer says his radio persona is "Playing a character.. He's a performance artist".

Jones is not the only loon (staged or otherwise) who has shown great contempt for both major political parties, yet glommed onto Trump.

Natural News’ Mike Adams has become a fervent Trumpite, while warning of massive Dem/leftist/media conspiracies to unseat Trump and bring about Pharmageddon.

Do you know a Republican named “Donald Trump”?

I’m pretty sure the Venn Diagram of Infowars listeners and Republicans would look like the Japanese flag.

I didn’t ask if he supported Trump or if Trump liked him. I asked for a cite showing that Jones was ‘a republican leader’ since that was the claim. Do you understand the difference? If so, can you provide a cite showing that Jones is a republican leader?

yanceylebeef, got any proof of your belief? A cite of any kind?

Slee

Okay, you got me. I have no cite for my throwaway line in an IMHO thread. You have vanquished me, good sir!

Trumpets will blare! Bards will sing of the Sleestak Victory!

You did it! You won an argument on the internet! Bask in your glory!

Men want to be like you, and women want to be with you!

Seriously dude. Step away from the internet, go outside and get some fresh air.

Are there any cites as to who the majority of his followers are? If Republicans are the cause of his high ratings, then I think it can safely be said the he is a “Republican leader”.

As long as we’re being fair, Stewart and The Daily Show were never, ever presented or promoted as anything other than comedy, and Stewart stating it as such was simply pointing out the obvious. It aired on Comedy Central, FFS.

Stewart would point out that he was fake news when called out on things like unfairly edited clips, but he was just as likely (if not moreso) to point it out when the show was lauded for doing important work in the political news arena.

You said: "Every republican I know thinks the guy is a loon, if they even know who he is. "

Donald Trump doesn’t think Alex Jones is a loon, he frequently repeats stories from Alex Jones. Donald Trump is a republican. You know Donald Trump.

Therefore, your statement that every republican you know thinks the guy is a loon is incorrect.

Yeah I’m also wondering how this guy Jones (who I’ve never heard of) could be the example of it being a right wing thing to do political commentary then use ‘oh I’m just an entertainer’ when you caught out too far, when Jon (actually) Stewart is such a bigger example, that everyone has heard of.

As far as ‘Trump likes’ v somebody actually being a conservative or a Republican, that’s one of a number of ways in which Trump has reshuffled the deck. Trump is not really a Republican. He took over the party for a successful independent run for President. Now that he is president he might see his agenda taken over by actual Republicans, and might not have a problem with that (because he’s also not a Democrat or any other identifiable thing besides being Trump). However there still isn’t much basis to say somebody is a Republican or a conservative because Trump likes them, if indeed Trump likes this guy Jones.

“I’m not a nutball, I just play one on the net.” Yeah, that’s gonna fly.

To put this little hijack to rest: Occam’s Razor suggests that these are gay or bi actors, acting as if they are straight and doing gay for pay. How much easier is it to find people like that, than to find people who will allow themselves to be used sexually in a way they probably don’t enjoy for what is probably not all that much money?

To Icarus’ original point, if Jones is saying things in a public venue without any disclaimers then he is responsible for the outcome, including jail time for threatening bodily harm to someone (if the police or DA choose to pursue it, of course).

That’s the standard line, right down to the usual reference to it airing on the Comedy Channel. But as I said, it’s disingenuous.

The Daily Show was sharp and pointed political satire. Stewart’s rants were funny but without question were intended to make serious points through humour. Stewart (and you) are selling him seriously short if you contend his rants were pure humour, and weren’t intended to show up issues. The show had serious and heavyweight interviewees to which Stewart put serious and pointed questions. He didn’t just get them to tell funny anecdotes or wear silly hats. He asked them serious political questions and got (often unusually) frank and serious answers.

You can’t do that and then expect to credibly deflect criticism by saying “hey it’s just a comedy show” just because that’s its nominal billing.

A few years ago, I started a similar thread about Glenn Beck.

But, I think I was pretty prescient with this statement:

He’s shown every sign of “normalizing” his opinions since leaving the airwaves a few years ago.

That said, I think Jones believes his own shtick more than Beck does/did. He’s probably playing it up a bit, but I don’t think his is all an act.

Jon Stewart wasn’t playing a character and never (that I am aware of) got sued for what he told people. He made it abundantly clear that he was a comedian and not a journalist.

Steven Colbert made it obvious (and over the top) that he was playing a character and regularly stated so in public forums.

Alex Jones is attempting to play both sides. Claim that he’s just a performance artist and his reprehensible views and actions are just an act, while trying to wink broadly to his audience.

The judge should not reward that behavior. If you’re dumb enough to turn around and tell your audience your attorney lied to the court, then fine, great admission of guilt.

Agree entirely. It’s actually pretty funny seeing these “alternate facts” people (Trump in particular) having problems in court where judges are saying - in effect -“you said it previously, don’t come in here and try to tell me you didn’t mean it, now that it suits you to do so”.

This excuse is especially galling because one of the points brought up (entirely rightfully, I might add) in the trial was that Jones’s kids were starting to adopt some of his “persona’s” views. That should rightfully be seen as a problem.

In other news, the jury has learned that Jones forgot what grades his kids were in because he ate “a big bowl of chili” for lunch, and he proceeded to inform the jury that George Soros has been making his marijuana stronger.

I just wish I had his recipe.

Damn those chemicals, putting fluffers out of a job!

Mr. Jones is merely a humble water filter merchant.

Alex Jones has probably materially hurt the country with his insane nonsense and shouldn’t be encouraged, but his rants are wildly entertaining. The lore of his worldview would make excellent worldbuilding for a post-apocalyptic fantasy book or videogame. He also has some of the most hot blooded speeches for the human spirit and technological progress I’ve ever heard.

My favorite anti-Jones CT is that he’s actually Bill Hicks working for the government as a disinformation agent (wheels within wheels).

It’s interesting to see which CTs he doesn’t embrace. He doesn’t preach Jewish CTs about ZOG and the like. He’s fairly egalitarian, as far as racial CTs go, which has put him in hot water with white nationalist types who call him controlled opposition.

He’s not a fan of lizard people or David Icke, though he does speak of interdimensional demons invading, which is close enough, though sometimes he sounds more metaphorical (the devil within us), other times literal (Hillary and Obama smell of sulfur and attract flies), and other times he attributes these beliefs to the elites, who think they’re communicating with offworld entities and developed a religion around them.

His moon landing CT isn’t the traditional hoax one, probably because that was so well worn he had to come up with something different to stand out. It’s convoluted, but from what I remember, he thinks the Apollo missions did go to the moon, but the landing shown on TV was faked, and they used advanced alien technology to install bases which the elites use as vacation destinations and research labs or…something.

EDIT: Every Jones thread should have this clip of him going super saiyan.
