The title just writes itself for that one.
You beat me to it.
The Boston Beguine is over.
In her memory I’m wearing, on my right arm to show that I’m in mourning, a Black Band! Black Band!
Where did it come from?
Imogene Coco was also great as the slightly senile Bernice on “Designing Women,” particularly her scenes with Anthony. The Monday rerun of the show on ion was dedicated to her.
The best scene I remember is when Bernice’s daughter put her in a home. She escapes and goes to the Sugarbakers. Later Julia tells Bernice’s daughter “Here in the South we do not put our old folks in a home. We parade them proudly in our homes.”
The character she played on Designing Women (Bernice, I think)sang “Black Man! Black Man!” in reference to the character of Anthony, who was, you guessed it, a black man.
whoosh
The next line of the song on the show is “Where do you come from?”
I still sing that all the time.
**Annie-X-mas, ** Imogene Coca? I know they’re very similar types and all…
:smack: Coffee first, then post.
The niece is trying to have Bernice declared incompetent. Julia says something like “In the South we don’t ask if you have crazy people in your family, we just ask which side they’re on.” The niece: “And which side are they on in your family?” Julia: “Both.”
My favorite part of that episode was that Bernice became more coherent when she drank.
Another great Bernice moment was her date with “Daddy” the hillbilly (played by Dub Taylor reprising the role from the Deliverance episode).
Meschach Taylor, who played Anthony, said he was on vacation in South Africa when a group of locals (i.e. not American tourists) pointed at him and started singing “Black man! Black man!”, which he said made for some really shocked expressions really funny to people who had no idea what they were talking about since they were much darker skinned than he is. Apparently the show has an international audience.
And, by god, it should.
I just got into Designing Women because ion started airing the reruns. I never could stand Dixie Carter or Delta Burke, but I have to admit–the show is good. Julia & Suzanne remind me of Melanie & Scarlett.
And Anthony is just too funny for words. That man can communicate an entire page with one look.
