I know that Prometheus was not highly regarded here, but I liked it. It was eerie and scary and gorgeous to look at. So what if the crew were a collection of halfwits? Somebody has to die horribly in these films and it might as well be them. Also, it had Idris Elba.
I liked Michael Fassbender’s David a lot and so I want to see this new film to see his latest android character. But won’t David be in this one as well? I’m so confused.
Somehow they discover Denver’s voice is the one thing that kills xenomorphs in their tracks. See, it turns out Henry John Deutschendorf Jr. was a bio-weapon created by the Engineers and…
I’m excited to see it though I found it kind of odd that Danny McBride of Eastbound and Down fame is going to be in it. I love that guy I just wonder if he is there to provide comic relief or if he’ll mostly be playing it straight.
Well I’ve just got back from the cinema, it left me all a bit disappointed. Very similar set up and tropes we’ve all seen before including the bait and switch from Alien 3 for flips sake. The pacing was all over the place and after three quarters I was seriously restless, bored even. First act setting up the landing on the planet, rather dull. Next bit on the planet quite good until the “stupid” actions from Prometheus crept in, particularly with that chick on the lander. Next act all dark and boring exposition. Last act, finally! Some action! But they telegraphed the ending from at least half way through the film. Really, all that money and this is as good as they could do? Please for the love of bog get a good script if any more are made.
A decent synopsis of the plot is up on the ths movie’s wikipedia page. It looks like the movie will skip over just about all of the unanswered questions and plot issues from Prometheus.
I honestly think I’m going to pass. I’ve gotten sucked in several times to films in the Alien franchise, and the only one I really liked was Aliens. Prometheus, for all the praise given to it (including here) was a profound disappointment. It proved that, even with Scott back at the helm, I couldn’t count on these flicks.
Just saw this. Got the ticket mostly because the last one of my Christmas gift tickets was expiring. It wasn’t as bad as Prometheus but there wasn’t really anything new or original to it and as Mavic Chen wrote the ending was trivially easy to see coming. I did like some of the parts and wasn’t bored during the movie but in the end it’s a 3/5 stars movie.
I love **Alien **as a great horror movie and think **Aliens **is one of the most kick ass movies ever. But I will also be passing. The series should have ended with Aliens. Prometheus was boring and went nowhere new.
I thought it was pretty good. I find it interesting that a franchise that began as “Jaws in Space” has expanded to cover some fairly profound subjects.
Re the franchise, Aliens has always struck me as an entertaining but mindless action film; Alien 3 could have been great if Fincher was allowed to do his job; Alien:Resurrection was the nadir. In my opinion, Prometheus and Covenant are better than those three.
There were two scenes in Covenant that I’m guessing are firsts:
1. The kiss,
and
2. The fight
between Walter and David with the same actor portraying both protagonists.
More like the 1979 “Alien” then any of the other Alien films (thanks in part to including the Goldsmith music) and feels more like a reboot then anything else, and that’s not a bad thing. At least the characters aren’t SO DUMB as the “scientists” in "Prometheus were.
If I had to rate them, I’d go
Alien
Covenant
Aliens
Alien 3
Alien: Resurrection
Prometheus
Aliens is good, but it’s TOO much of an “action” film for me and I consider the Alien franchise more Science fiction/suspense than Science fiction/action
