If You Like SF, Go See Prometheus! (no open spoilers)

Just saw it with my wife, we both agree, that was the best damn movie EVAH! Well, maybe since Star Wars. It puts all those comic-book movies that have been showing in theaters into perspective. It occurred to me as we were having lunch afterward that it was like reading a topnotch SF story … an incredible ride, and much for your mind to chew on afterward.

Suddenly, the Aliens universe is as rich and intriguing as the Star Trek and Star Wars universes.

I’ll grant you, there was stuff in there that had me closing my eyes cause, way gory, but damn, damn, damn, I’m totally OK with it, the movie was THAT GOOD.

Holy shit, that was good. My inner god is doing handsprings! And there was almost no sex in the movie! That’s how good it was!

I am not in any way, shape or form associated with the folks who made Prometheus. This is honest WOW I’m talking here.

I’ve already got my ticket for a 7 PM IMAX showing tonight. Can’t wait.

No, you can’t. One piece of advice, watch the movie carefully. You are shown much and told little. We had a lot of fun figuring it out afterwards.

OK, if Evil Captor has that much praise for a movie despite it having almost no sex, that sounds like a pretty good recommendation to me.

Got a one-sentence, non-spoiler synopsis?

I love sci-fi but not really bothered about this. In general sci-fi isn’t done well on screen (IMHO).

Aliens turn out to be vicious assholes in all possible ways.

Well, this is directed by Ridley Scott, who previously directed the rather good SF movies “Blade Runner”[sup]*[/sup] and “Alien”. I had some doubts based on the trailers and leaked info, but was very impressed, but gave it a go. Absolutely recommended.
*: Looking a Philip K Dick’s IMDB page, I would like to say that “Blade Runner” is the only story made into a good movie.

Just got back from seeing it. I’m a big fan of Ridley Scott’s work, and given that sequels and prequels miss the mark more often than hit, I went in really hoping that he would not disappoint.

He didn’t.

Fassbender steals the show.

There are some parts that I want to nitpick, but I’ll leave that alone since this is a no-spoilers thread. But overall, I definitely recommend this movie, especially if you liked the original 1979 Alien.

Earth heiroglyphics lead future explorers to a planet that might explain much of humankind’s origin and purpose in the universe, and/or fuck them up in all sorts of ways.

I’ll probably watch it. But Alien is one of the most overrated things I’ve ever seen. The best bit about it was the Giger artwork, but even that’s overrated for me.

E.T .(channeling his inner Jar Jar Binks): Isssa trap!

BTW I haven’t seen the movie so I actually have no idea whether or not any trapdom is any part of the plot.

I know it’s long, and I start squirming at 90 minutes. How badly does it drag in the middle?

It didn’t drag for me. Not once did I check the time.

A rare thing happened for me. I had bought a drink at the concession stand, and when the movie was over, I realized that I had not touched it at all, even though I was a bit thirsty. I was so absorbed in the movie that the drink ceased to exist for me.

I don’t get it. Granted it was visually magnificent, but it made no sense at all. I guess I must be nitpicking here as no one else seems to have any objection to the fact that the central premise of the whole movie is totally impossible. I thought the characters were too inconsistant to even be considered one dimensional, the dialogue seemed to have been written almost at random, character’s reactions to events were ludicrously implausible. There were some fine performances, (as well as some average ones) but the story was almost comical. What was all that puddle-deep theological/mystical twaddle about? Was that supposed to be profound? It wasn’t. It was just noise. I watched it several hours ago and I’m still a little annoyed with Scott and Co. Wish I’d rewatched The Avengers instead, at least that was deliberately ridiculous.

So is it an Alien prequel?

“NASA and the Vatican agree that is almost mathematically impossible that we can be where we are today without there being a little help along the way,” Scott said. “That’s what we’re looking at (in the film), at some of Eric van Daniken’s ideas of how did we humans come about.” Ridley Scott on The hollywood reporter.com. That explains the movie. He’s an idiot.

DON’T READ IF YOU HAVEN’T SEEN THE TRAILER!

I haven’t seen the movie, but the trailer (and having seen “Alien”) seems to spoil it. These astronauts go to the planet where the U-shaped ship from “Alien” is, right? The trailer gives me the impression that they have the task of preventing this ship from leaving from there and going to Earth. Since we know, from “Alien” that the ship is still there in the future, they must succeed. And there’s that shot in the trailer of the U-shaped ship crashing, so…

Maybe it’s like “Titanic”. We know the boat sinks, we just watch to see who lives and who dies. Or maybe the trailer has faked me out completely.

…jeez, haven’t heard that name in 30 years…

Just got back from the IMAX 3D movie. It was excellent, beginning to end. Once scene had me crawling in my seat. Fassbender did steal the movie. There was only one scene that seemed out of place and didn’t work for me. Nice foreshadowing too.

Kinda sorta. It’s got a lot in common with it, and it isn’t not a prequel:

The Weyland corporation is running everything again, and there’s an honest to goodness nearly-1979 Alien in the final shot of the movie. Lots of other stuff, but due to the way it ended it’s not really a direct prequel.

You might want to post this to the other Prometheus thread, which has open spoilers. Not that I’m saying you have posted any spoilers, but you can prolly good direct answers there more easily.
