There seems to be an overall decline in UFO sightings, which in itself is a phenomenon worthy of further investigation.
There’s a theory that there’s something of the zeitgeist in UFO sightings - it started off in pre-flight days with reports of zeppelin-like airships (which weren’t invented just yet), then moved on to winged planes (before they took to the skies), and then went quiet for a bit until the UFO frenzy that started in the late 40s/early 50s.
Journal of strange phenomena The Fortean Times collates reports to form an Annual Weirdness Index. This Index doesn’t investigate or judge the veracity of the individual reports, it just logs them and notes the trends. Ghost sightings seem to be going down rapidly too.
After Close Encounters came out, they may have decided their work here was done.
