Bah. I posit that all political parties contain dumbasses, and that said dumbasses are frequently the ones making the most noise. Therefore, people associate the quirks of the dumbasses with the party that said dumbasses affiliate themselves with.

Agreed, Robert. Any and every group, whether it be political party, large corporation, church body, citizens of a particular city, shares this problem. The only message coming out of the group comes from the nutballs. Feh.
