The SDMB Staff have a very long history of performing routine cleanup of the thousands of trolls that have come here, either on their first time or on return tours using sockpuppets. Taken by itself the thread and poster may not have seemed like a sock, but given two other recent attempts on this exact, same subject by a Guest and his sock, it shouldn’t have fooled as many people as it did. Of course some may have missed those other threads, for which they can be excused, but over the history of the SDMB hardly any child molestation/pedophilia threads have been allowed to stand.
It’s unclear why someone might really want to learn more about how the diseased mind of a psychopathic pedophile works, but then everyone has their area of special interest. There are other areas of interest to people which are not allowed discussion on the SDMB - peer-to-peer file sharing is not illegal in itself, yet almost all threads pointing to software and resources on that subject are closed and/or deleted. Lockpicking is not itself illegal, depending on the circumstances, and every thread I’ve seen giving details on that has been closed. It’s always unfortunate when it’s a thread about your special interest that gets shut down, but then again people seem to have this strange idea that somehow no other message boards exist out there that cover these areas in a scientific, enlightened, and rational manner. I’m certain they do for most any topic; I have no knowledge or links of pedophile boards that fall into that category as I tend to stay away from depraved shit like that.
This isn’t helpful at all, actually. How many times, exactly, has an established non-sock poster been “vanished with no explanation”? How many Admins or Mods did you mail who refused to tell you why the thread was moved and why the Guest was banned? The Staff have said repeatedly to mail them, more than one if you wish, to ask these things, so I’m certain one of them would have answered you. If you did and they did not, then I apologize for my presumption, but I’ve never had the SDMB Admins and Mods not answer me forthrightly and quickly when I’ve asked about a Board matter like this.

This suggests to me that the poster wasn’t just a sock, but was actually making up the entire thing. It may just be careless phrasing–obviously there’s no litmus test for pedophilia. But if the poster was not a pedophile, then this is trolling, not puppetry–and trolling of a particularly distasteful type. Removing the thread serves the same purpose as washing grafitti off a building.
(This may be the first time in SDMB history when a poster’s best defense would be “But I really am a pedophile!”)
Then the correct thing to do would be to leave a card for him at the Albermarle Club and write on the back, “To Mr. FritzRitz, posing as a pedmophile.”
I am bothered a bit by the people in this thread who keep using words like “depraved” and “sick.” Someone’s fantasy may be unpalatable to you, but labeling like that is ignorant. I don’t have a problem with trolls and socks being banned, and that thread in particular had several earmarks of a trainwreck-in-the-making, so know that this post isn’t about that.
It is a fact that some people are sexually attracted to things many of us would find disturbing. I squinch up my nose and say “eww” anytime someone mentions sextoys, Cameron Diaz or guys who have hairy chests, but that’s just me. It’s likely that y’all would find my fantasies pretty out-there, too.
The whole illegal thing above is semantics: the fantasy is legal; the act would be illegal - it’s not an illegal fantasy, it’s a fantasy of something that is illegal, and you people are bright enough to know the difference.

I think this whole tiff stems from simple lack of communication. If Lynn (or whoever it was that deleted the thread) had simply closed it with a note “OP has been banned for being a sock” I think everyone would have been satisfied.
It seems that the administration simply wanted to get rid of the situation with as little attention as possible. But when something that’s not an obvious troll (or spam) disappears without explanation, people notice.
The thread in question did not seem an obvious troll to me, Eve, and some others who read it. I think in this case a closing of the thread with a brief note could have avoided all controversy, and I hope the administration takes this course in the future. What seems obvious to our enlightened administrators and mods is not always so obvious to the rest of us addle-pated slugs.
I hope I’m not long term enough to be included in the ‘shoulda known better’ crowd, since Great Debates scares me silly I wouldn’t have recognized returning trolls from there if it’d been last week.

I’m a parent of a child with Aspergers, and I was abused by a pedophile. Never thought those two aspects of my life would converge in a thread and I was quite interested. Like the other parents, I disagree that there could be any possible causal link between Asperger’s and pedophilia, and would have made the point myself had other posters not gotten to it first. But as a person who’s earliest sexual memories start far earlier than they oughta, I was following that thread and actively questioning the OP for my own benefit. No, I’m not inclined to seek out ped sites, but someone brought up the topic here and it interested me. Never thought of it as a special interest, but there it was and it resonated enough with me to participate.
So, now we know what happened, and that’s fine. 'Twoulda been simpler, IMO, to simply inform us rather than making us wonder and ask, but what’s done is done.

Would someone be kind enough to educate me with regards to the specific meanings of “sock” (aka sock-puppet) and “troll” as used above? Obviously I can make some conjectures based on the context, but I’m not totally sure I understand.

Whoa there, big spender. Define “psychopathic”. Certainly someone who trolls and socks is well on their way to being psychopathic, but a person who keeps their orientation under control is certainly far from psychopathic. I mean, would you call ordinary trolling board warriors psychopaths? If so you get a pass.
Imagine if you were primarily attracted to adults, but none, or hardly any, of them wanted to have sex with you, and it was highly illegal to boot. Would that automatically make you a psychopath? Would you appreciate it if people called you a psychopath, and others wanted to criminalize your state of mind?
“Sock” is short for “sock puppet.” It means a person who registers more than one username on a board, like talking to yourself with a sock puppet on your hand.
A “troll” is a person who makes deliberately inflammatory posts just for the purpose of getting other posters angry.
To comment further, that refers specifically to people that’re attracted to male teens whereas hebephile refers to those that’re attracted to females.
In common usage, I think they’re synonymous with ephebophile edging out hebephile in popularity though.
