All this panic. (Dockworkers strike)

How is this sane?

I always keep extra stuff.
I don’t think TP is gonna run out here or nationally.

I think a lot of people are remembering the shortages and supply problems of 2020. I confess to having a bit of that particular almost post-traumatic response myself.

We don’t import TP.

Cut it out with the facts, we’re trying to panic over here.

I got 2 50lb bags of flour and 10 cases of water.

Neither is imported.

I only drink French water.

I’m going to stock up on American cheese, barbecue, and apple pie.

But what if you need fine French flour, and Perrier water?

More unnecessary facts during this time of panic.

You’ll be sorry when these drums of hand sanitizer and cases of face masks payoff. I’m WAY ahead of the curve this time.

We did during the COVID-19. I bought a 6-pack of TP from Peru (which I needed, and saved the wrapper) and a 4-pack labeled in Italian (didn’t need it, but I wanted the wrapper as a souvenir).

Note: I live in Iowa. The local supermarket chain (Hy-Vee) decided to schlepp imported TP to the middle of the continent! What a crazy country! What a crazy time!

It’s not

You know the saying that generals are always fighting the last war? People are always prepping for the last crisis and not the current one.

I still can’t figure out why toilet paper is the one thing people start hoarding. I mean it’s inconvenient to run out, but I just can’t see it as panic inducing.

Searching turned up this quote:

“Roughly 99% of toilet paper Americans use is made in the United States.” *

It’s that other 1% that makes this full panic mode! And what little that is imported comes from Canada, Mexico and Asia (and west coast ports are not affected). But still, Panic!

* One does wonder where the TP Americans don’t use comes from.

Just checked and my booze is made in Louisville, KY. WHEW!

The head of the union is apparently a big Trump supporter that announced a year ago that he was going to try to influence the election. Their demands are crazy, probably intentionally so that it drags out for a while.

I’m nominally a pro union guy, but these guys apparently average 150k and are demanding a 70% pay bump. Also, to never automate. Fuck them, get whatever robots are used in Rotterdam asap.

Shit, shows what I know: x.com

They make 150k due to shit loads of overtime. The top rate is 39 bucks an hour. Entry rate is 20. It’s 70 percent over 6 years, which is less than 10 percent a year (yes you read that right) which seems like a much more reasonable number. It all depends who presents the number.

For those unwilling or unable to click through: a tentative deal was reached this afternoon, and the strike has been suspended until at least January 15th.

The strike is over.

I wonder if Guido and Louie had a chat with the Union boss and management head and made them offers they couldn’t refuse …

My anger was mostly about what I thought was a political tactic. Since it seems not to be the case (or am I speaking too soon again?) then yeah, negotiate for what you can get.
