From Broadway:
“We’ve had a Real Nice Clambake” by Rogers and Hammerstein, from Carousel contains the inimitable lines:
“The vittles we et were good, you bet!
The company was the same.”
Of course the same authors produced “I am sixteen, going on seventeen” in Sound of Music.
The name of the song escapes me as does the “artist”. It was sometime late 70’s early 80’s. The storyline of the song had some ditzy female getting phone installed all over in her house by the telephone guy she was trying to hit on. It contained the momorable line:
“Hey baby baby I’m the telephone line”
Mac Arthur Park
Undercover Angel–Alan O’Day

That’s Telephone Man by Meri Wilson, from 1977. A Dr. Demento favorite!
I win…
“Delta Dawn what’s that flower you have on?
Could it be a faded rose from days gone byyyyyy?..”
Please don’t stone me.
“It caayn’t be wrong
When it feeeeels so right!
'Cause you…you light up ma-aaa-aaaah
Liiiiiiife!”
I can’t have been the first person to think of “You Light Up My Life”. I just can’t. My whole view of the board is shifting.
Oh yeah, we sang a gelded version of “Looks Like We Made It” at my 8th-grade graduation. Quel frommage.

How could I have forgotten to mention “Somone left a cake out in the rain” ?
And the Village People aren’t tongue-in-cheek?
My nominations:
Three Times a Lady - Lionel Richie
I Believe I Can Fly
Pretty Woman - Roy Orbison
Babe - Styx
Gonna Kiss You All Over by Exile was both cheesy and slimy.
But the smarmiest and cheesiest song of all time is Midnight At The Oasis.

The lyrics for Milli Vanilli’s “Girl You Know It’s True” are incredibly cheesy. E.g.,

Well blowero I guess it’s just that Village People were all tongue in cheek.
A little defensive that one of my fav bands is only remembered for that one goofy song.

Stand by Your Man. But I still love it.
In fact there are a lot of songs in this thread that are quite good. I can’t believe someone has a problem with I Surrender by Rainbow.
“Windy” Association
“Popcorn” Hot Butter (cheesy and slimy, too)
“Winchester Cathedral” – The New Vaudeville Band
