Blazing Saddles

Ichi The Killer is probably the most extraordinary movie I’ve seen in years. On the surface it is a Japanese Yakuza movie based on a manga comic of the same name. At its heart though it is a virtually unique character study of two men; the first (Ichi) is a pure sadist and the second (Kakihara) is a pure masochist. It is undoubtedly one of the most, if not the most, violent film I’ve ever seen but it is also the most inventive which is why I love it so much. If you can find a copy, get it as I promise you will never, ever have seen anything quite like it. You should have a strong stomach and very, very dark sense of humor though.

Last House On the Left is an OK movie which is more important for its historical significance than anything else. Pretty much every slasher film since the early 70’s owes a huge debt of gratitude to that movie. It isn’t particulary great, has a very low budget and fairly poor acting but it is an example of what can be done by a creative director with very little tools at his disposal. You need a fairly strong stomach for that one too.

The Thin Red Line
Blade Runner

As a teenager of the 80’s I’m ashaned to say the Breakfast club is still my favourite movie (and yes I know it is crap).

All-time favorite: Room with a View

However, LOTR seems to be coming up fast; I watch Fellowship at least once a week.

Fellowship of the Ring
all the Indiana Joneses and all the Back to the Futureses. Also Rainman

 Ishtar

Diner

If you have a DVD player it is quite readily available on eBay. However, if you think it is going to be too harsh then I’d stay away from it as it will probably be more disturbing than you would imagine.

Well, not counting the 26 Japanese Godzilla movies that have been made (so far), I’d have to say…

The Matrix!

Barry

Fight club

Usual suspects
The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly

Bring It On
