All video, PC, portable, even cell phone games banned in Greece! Prison Terms!WTF?

http://gamespot.com/gamespot/stories/news/0,10870,2879165,00.html

Can someone explain the rational behind this one? All video games, PC games, Gamboy Games, any electronic games are banned in Greece!! Prison terms and huge fines are the norm !!! Even tourists are fined huge amounts of cash for bringing portable games into the country!

Cell phone games? Is that country the new USSR? I have never spent any amount of time there, but does this seem likely that it would happen in that backward ass country?

That is fucked up.

Apparently, it’s in response to a surge in unlicensed gambling (which can be facilitated by the Internet, and which is an area where government can be legitimately concerned).

It is a massive over-reaction on the Greek government’s part; I understand that a legal challenge has already been mounted in the Greek courts, and there’s already talk of getting the EU involved… so it probably won’t last long.

Some days you have to be reminded why it’s a joy to live in the U.S.A.

God bless America!
Land that i Love!
Stand beside her,
and guide her,
Through Bowser’s castle to save the princess…

Oh bloody hell. The U.S. better invade Greece pronto. After all, what do we have this massive military machine for, if not the protection of fundamental liberties?

Ah, don’t worry. If the Greek supreme court won’t overturn this legislation faster than you can say “Super Mario”, the inevitable European court will. It doesn’t stand a chance in hell.

Thank you, Tars, I needed that laugh!

Times like this that you just gotta taste the irony of how the land where democracy was born turned out.

So when do they start painting Pacman symbols in the streets?

Actually the word “Pacman” comes from the Greek word “Pax” which means “peace” which is basically what the Pacman wants…to live in peace away from the ghosts…and there you go.

Because of course, Civil liberties are never threatened there, right?

Of course not. We have access to high-powered rifles and explosives.
(That’s a joke. I do not advocate political assassination or terrorism. Unless they come for my PC.)
(That was a joke, too.)

As I explained more in detail in another thread, it’s most probably a reaction to the devellopment of machines appearing as usual game machines but with hidden logiciels such as poker, and used to transform your apparently legitimate bar/shop/whatever in an illegal mini-casino.

STOP REMINDING OF THIS! PLEASE STOP REMINDING ME!!! WAAAAAAA!!

:frowning:

See, I’m supposed to be moving there anytime from now to a couple of years from now and video games are a huge part of my life.

I posted all about it on my LJ:

See?

Yea, you’re right. Not to mention, it would be VERY difficult to enforce such a ban. You’re talking about a country that can barely enforce parking tickets and with a customs that pretty much is nothing more than asking what’s in your suitcase before waving you by.

In some ways, Greece is definatly ass backwards, but in others it’s much more liberal than people give it credit for. Heh
