All who take pleasure in other's misfortune, shame on you.

In this thread I asked a legitimate question regarding what I thought was a cdr program problem which turned out to be the work of a virus instead. Faster than you can say Kazaa, there are people lining up to call me a self righteous thief and crybaby.

I believe that if you have already purchased the music in say an lp or cassette, it is not illegal to dl a copy of it. Is this not true? I and am acutely aware of copyrights and I take them seriously. (I have had articles published btw)

I paid for my upgrade to norton 2002 and run live update regularly, but it seems I was lucky to get some new altered version of the "love letter"virus that attacks not only mp3’s but every image file as well. ( it was titled “so sorry”) I lost every photo that I have scanned, saved or been sent and recordings of my daughter’s performances. The “if you’re too stupid to keep from getting a virus it is your own fault–you fucking thief” arguement does not make me feel any better.

What the fuck is wrong with people who seem to get their jollies by telling others ----- I told you so? The attitude here is positively toxic.

BTW don’t open anything that says (sorry)

It seems that there will always be people in this category. :frowning:

Schadenfreude is the best! That’s why I go to rotten.com and dailyrotten.com but my schadenfreude tends to be along the death, dismemberment and stupidity vein rather than everyday stuff like this.
At least you learned a lesson to never open emails with attachments ever again. That’s a good thing and in the spirit of this board which is about fighting ignorance.

Schadenfreude is the something, at least. I’m not sure I’d use the term “best,” though. To each their own.

It is a neat word, though, and it’s nice that a language recognizes the behavior as occuring often enough to give it its own term. This brings to mind a question: taking pleasure in others’ misfortune is very often tied to (by anecdotal observation) taking displeasure in others’ fortune. The former is schadenfreude–does the latter maladjustment have its own term?

God DAMN why is there not a band named Schadenfreude. It just screams S/M death metal industrial thrash .

Uh, didn’t you notice the big smilie face next to evilhanz’s post? It was a kindly dig, and now your ranting about it?!

Sure didn’t sound like a kindly dig to me, smiley face or not.

Didnt sound like one to me either. And for the record, downloading an MP3 of music you have already purchased is NOT stealing, its fair use. Its only stealing if you didnt buy it.

Yeah. My gosh, if you fork over your money for a recording, even if it was 15 years ago, you still have a right to LISTEN to it, OK? The artist and music company got their money from you already!

I have a lot of LPs that either are not available on CD, or never were available on CD. My dad left us a kajillion LPs - I don’t feel like buying them all over, on the CD format. Why should I? If I find a copy of something I already OWN on MP3, I sure as hell feel entitled to listen to it. Why would anyone have a problem with this?

Some people need to open their minds and realize that some of us buy our music, we just like having it in MP3 format. (Ever hear of the iPod or similar devices? Nothing could be niftier than copying your entire collection of purchased music onto such a small device, and taking it with you everywhere!)

In evilhanz’s post he clearly seemed to be  because he didn’t feel a bit sorry for me; I didn’t think his post was in jest at all.

My purpose is not to rehash that unpleasantness but I guess an attempt to ask people to not be so nasty each other without good reason. To just be nasty because you see a chance to get a dig in is petty and childish.

I have not been able to pinpoint it so far, but I can tell you I don’t think I got the virus in an e-mail. My e-mail is protected and scanned clean for viruses. I never open attachments unless I know who they came from.

So the only other place I can think of is possibly kazaa. I have a cable modem so my connection is always on. I also added another hard drive recently and maybe NAV didn’t pick up on it. It was on but possibley not scanning D drive for viruses.

I am posting from work now cause now my pc won’t egven boot.
I’ll try starting it with a boot disk when I get home but I may have to f-disk the whole damn thing. (over 20 gigs of stuff just gone)

Oh my gosh, that’s terrible, TheMermaid. I hope you had a lot of it backed up?

This is another reason I haven’t turned on my PC in a while, and am sticking with my Mac. (At least when I am downloading email.) The viruses are coming in fast and furious these days, so it seems. And I don’t have a virus program for my PC right now. (I know, I love living on the edge.)

I think I’ll go back up all my files now…

Someone close to me has been noticing that (when he was back in university) almost every file he downloaded from Kazaa was infected. There’s a very good chance you’re right.

Best of luck getting your machine cleaned up - that reminds me, I told him I’d help him with his…

Damn, I wanted to be the first one to jump in here and use that word so everybody would be impressed with my vocabulary. Shucks.

Liberalism?

/me ducks & runs

Strangely enough I haven’t had a virus for years. Last one I had was when a friend burnt some stuff onto a cd for me and infected my computer. I don’t have a scanner either.

Optimist: I’m immune!
Pessimist: I’m due…

If you’re still reading this, Mermaid, I hope you’re starting to back up your files onto CD. I’m sorry to hear about losing your daughter’s performances and your photo files.

(Of course, if you have, please excuse me. I’m in a Dear Abby mood today . . . )

A similar thing happened when I asked for recommendations about where to find places for sharing recorded music similar to http://www.soundclick.com (where Allan has his original recordings). There are no illegal MP3s there, just original music that is shared willingly.

Someone (who apologized later) gave me a

“Countdown to the Pit- 3,2,1…” I was so fucking pissed I saw red. I mean, not all file sharing and music sharing is illegal and it’s assholish to assume so.

I’m sorry for your data loss- Gotta backup, backup, backup, I guess. Viruses suck big time, but “I told you so- ha, ha” is even worse.

Zette

Even after Norton found, quarantined and deleted nearly 9000 infected files, it seems my pc is still pissed.

PC won’t boot with boot disc, and is not responding to system restoration discs, and Goback won’t kick in either.

I am stuck with a black screen that says, “non valid system disc” or something like that. I don’t even know how to reformat from this place.

It looks like I may need to take my computer in to the local PC repair guy to fix it this time.

Fuck, fuck fuck!

I am the Queen of trying to keep people from picking on others for their misfortunes. I set up my whole goddamn Board with that as one of the primary Rules.

Unfortunately, here I often get my ass reamed by immature fuckheads that think “Hey, doode, ‘free speech’ and all! If you don’t like it, leave!” (which is bullshit, as anyone with half a brain should know what “free speech” really means…and that it does not apply here) Ironically, many of these same people get very upset when someone does the exact same thing to them…

I also notice that when I try to defend someone who is being attacked for no good reason, or for having misfortune happen to them, few people here will ever back me up. There’s typically just a profound silence. And since I keep getting left alone and out in the wind, it takes a greater and greater effort for me to now give a shit about anyone being picked on.

Oh, and regarding the whole MP3 download of something purchased on LP/8-track/Cassette? Although I agree with you that it should be legal, and IMO there is nothing morally wrong with it if you’ve purchased it already, in two threads here I was answered by people that pretty clearly showed, by cites of case law, that it is, in fact, illegal to download the song in that set of circumstances. Even if had a B-side of a 45, and had no turntable, it would still be illegal to download the MP3. At least, that was what they showed, and I have to agree with what I saw at the time (to my disgust, however).

I’d post some links here, but I can’t wait for Search to wake up.

Well, if that’s the case, that is one law I will gleefully break, without feeling one iota of guilt.

Unless you can show me where I can buy the CD for the 1976 soundtrack of John Addison’s “Swashbuckler” (I have two LPs - the first one got scratched so I bought another one.) Unless there is a CD available of “Swashbuckler”, I feel no guilt in owning MP3s of it. Someone else ripped their LP and made it into an MP3, and shared it with me. (I am too lazy to figure out how to rip my own MP3s from my LPs, but will learn eventually.)

And this is supposedly so terrible somehow? Because I already paid for the recording (twice) and yet I didn’t personally rip the MP3s myself?

I guess I should just say that yeah, I ripped the MP3s myself. I mean, I am capable of doing it (I have Toast 5 on my iMac, which apparently can transfer LPs to CD). I have the original LPs to transfer. So what’s the big freaking difference if I do it, or someone does it for me? And why shouldn’t I be able to listen to MP3s of my obscure music collection? I mean, when a commercial CD comes out of a recording I already own on LP, I usually end up buying it. But when it is never released on CD (and it often isn’t), why the hell can’t I listen to MP3s?

Man, this sort of thing really pisses me off. What a greedy, selfish, stupid, nonsensical law.
