But honestly your comment isn’t anything to do with Muslims being violent. No, ignore all fucking context, previous comments on that topic, everything, honestly you were just commenting on football.

I think FP is sincere, Gary. I just can’t help thinking he sincerely wants to participate in broad ranging and deep discussions by commenting exclusively on very narrowly defined and shallow aspects of the discussion (whether or not tangential to the subject) as they present themselves. It comes off as obfuscatory, but really it’s just idle pedantry. I don’t think I’ll engage in any more of these time wasting side arguments with him.

Subjects like the level of support for terrorism and extremism in the Muslim world are Big Subjects, with a lot of uncertainty and nuance, and they don’t lend themselves to being pinned down conclusively in discussions of this sort. And certainly not to proving from one particular incident. There are a lot of subjects of this type. But even in such subjects, you can form an informed opinion by looking at the big picture, comprised of many smaller incidents and evidence that you encounter over time. So the assessment in each individual case can be meaningful to the bigger subject. Not because it settles the issue on its own, but because it forms part of the bigger picture.
In sum, you can engage in a discussion of a narrowly defined aspect of an issue which is not tangential to the subject and is meaningful to the bigger issue, but this does not amount to a declaration that this issue on its own is conclusive as to the bigger issue. Aka a “data point”.
