What’s being disagreed with is the conclusions you draw about that religion in general as a result, and what you think should be done about it. THAT is why the word “bigot” comes up.

Less than a week ago, we had a thread about a Christian who was calling for gays to be executed. Should every Christian be condemned because of this?
This week we have a group of Muslims committing a horrendous act of terrorism. Should every Muslim be condemned because of this?
Nobody is denying that some Muslims are terrorists. We’re pointing out that most Muslims are not terrorists.

Dude, you lost that thread and lost it hard. The only reason it became a big deal to bring it up was because what you said was so incredibly stupid that people were mocking you for it. Butts don’t work like paper towel tubes. And the facts of the case proved you wrong about it being something that couldn’t be done.
I’m probably the most sympathetic person when it comes to trying to say one thing and having people take it a completely different way. I do it all the time, especially when angry. But there is no way this happened here. Your arguments were just wrong, and you refuse to admit it.
And, BTW, we knew exactly what the OP’s point was. That’s why we mocked it. His sheer lack of knowledge while conveying that point actually made it funny.
Is that why people persist to this day in misrepresenting what I said? Is that why they can’t let it go? Usually when people come out on top of an argument they’re willing to let it go (as I’ve done time and again when it comes to this subject). It’s only when they’ve lost that they keep at it and at it and can’t let it go.
I almost single-handedly refuted every accusation hurled at Paterno in that thread so I can hardly see how you can claim I lost it. The only thing people had left to try to salvage themselves was to make an issue of the paper towel experiment and they can’t get that right even today. It was never something for me to do, but (heh) for my opponents to do.
I’m not going to re-argue the thread here but I’ll be happy to re-visit it in the appropriate thread should anyone really want to go at it again. In the meantime, console yourself with your perceived victory, hollow and insignificant though it may be, but at least try to encourage people to get it right if they’re going to insist on using it to pretend they came out on top.

Smug, I’ll grant you…at least some of the time. It isn’t a normal trait by far, but it does arise from time to time. It’s hard not to be smug given some of the things I read around here. “Out of touch” and “idiot” are easy insults to throw around and usually mean little other than the other person has politics that differ from yours. Substantiating their actual existence can be another matter. You got any examples other than political opinions you don’t like?

Nah. There are a lot of people who want to believe that, even desperately so. So much so in fact that they may have fooled themselves into actually believing it.
But when you start or participate in a thread where you’re making all sorts of outlandish accusations about a certain person and a poster comes along, and, bit by bit as the evidence comes out, show you to have been wrong on virtually every one of them, it’s hard to argue that poster lost the thread.
Or it would be if one were honest.
