Allowable carry-on item?

Do I have to place a single tube of lip balm into a quart-sized see-through plastic ziploc bag in order to have it with me on the airplane?
I’ve found the TSA site not terribly helpful in answering that particular question, and I don’t want to cause any issues in the security line.

Thanks!

Why not call the airline you are flying with and ask them. Or check out that airline’s web site.

I took Chap Stik in my purse, no problem.

Last time I checked, the volume of lip balm was small enough to be okay.

I flew two days ago with only a tiny sample-sized toothpaste. I placed it in the bin and the TSA guy brought me a plastic bag. He stated, “The requirement is that all liquids and gels must be in one clear plastic bag of or under the specified dimensions.”

I flew last week to Washington DC. Only there overnight so I only took a carry-on. In the carry-on was a quart size plastic bag containing 3 oz toothpaste, razor, 3 oz shaving cream, 3 oz deodorant, 3 oz hydrocortisone cream (over the counter), toothbrush, hairbrush. (A sign at the security line says nothing over 3 oz and quart or gallon plastic bags are OK.) Departure security checked my clear plastic bag by picking it out, looking at it once, and saying “OK”, dropping it back into my carry-on.

My lip balm continued to reside in my purse where it always resides. Special pocket for it so no way it was not noticed in the X-ray machine. No problem.

On the way back, they never even checked my clear plastic bag. And they missed a forgotten bag of potato chips which I inadvertently smuggled out of DC.

TSA has just announced the 3-1-1 policy for such items; 3 –1–1 on air travel = 3 ounce bottle or less; 1 quart-sized, clear, plastic, zip-top bag; 1 bag per passenger placed in screening bin.

And they are adament you can only carry one quart-sized ziplock bag in your carry on!!! Since I put my laptop bits and pieces in various quart-sized ziplock bags, I am in trouble.

I may be mistaken, but I’m pretty sure that this means only 1 ziplock bag with toiletry items. I don’t think they are prohibiting additional ziplock bags for other purposes, which don’t need to be separated out.

I flew today and kept my chapstick in a ziplock bag with my small tube of toothpaste. It was probably not necessary, but when in doubt, leave it in the bag. No big deal.

I flew at the end of August — just shortly after the addition of the new restrictions.

I carried a tube of Chap-Stick in my pocket. I asked the screener if that was OK, or if I’d need to toss it. She just laughed and said it wasn’t a problem. On the flight home, I didn’t even bother to ask.

I think this is correct. I pack all my stuff in ziplock baggies, including my clothes. They take up a lot less space because you can smush the air out, plus if someone does open your bag, they aren’t pawing through your stuff!

Screeners love it- they lift out a bag or two, smile and say “Okay, thanks!”
