Allowances for people in their Twenties?!

I just read (in the "Cheap bastard " thread) about someone complaining about how much allowance they are GIVEN at age 20? Does this cheese anyone else off?

I wouldn’t say it cheeses me off, but I found it hard to be sympathetic…at 20, a lot of people are on their own, and the only allowance they get is what they give themselves, after all the bills are paid.

I’ve never gotten allowance. It kinda odds me out that someone who’s 20 would get allowance in the first place. I think that if someone’s 20, they should at least try to get a job of some type, even if they’re going to college.

It cheeses the hell out of me.

Kids have an allowence giver at age 16. It’s called “fast food”. Anyone who gives their kids an allowance past the time they can be working is not doing their kid any good, IMO.

I’m not sure if this counts, but when I was in college (up to the time I got married at 21), my parents sent me money every month. It was enough for rent, food, and a little extra for clothes and stuff. I’d say about 1/4 of my college friends still got an “allowance”. It doesn’t make us scumbags, just lucky.

Oh, and I wasn’t allowed to have a job in high school, and during the summers I traveled and couldn’t hold down a job, so I didn’t work (outside of casual babysitting) at all until I was 18. I turned out okay…

Now let me get this straight, some 20 year old is complaining about not getting their allowance! What is this world coming to! When I was 20 I never got an allowance. Oh wait a minute, maybe I did, nevermind.

Although now that I think about it, getting $3.50 a week is just plain bizarre. If that’s the case, why bother? Perhaps he’ll come in here and explain the situation.

If you read the reply on the original thread, he lives in Pakistan, and apparantly things are very different over there. I would agree that an American at 20 probably should not be getting an allowance, unless the parents are well enough off to have decided to support their children until they’re through with college. I’ll buy the fact that things are different in Pakistan, though.

What really got me was his complaining about how cheap his parents are! I think they don’t owe him a dime! As a matter of fact, he even stated that he couldn’t get a part time job because people might laugh at him.I hope he stays in Pakistan!

Hey that’s a pack of cigarettes a week. That’s nothing to sneeze at. What really pisses me off is the trustifarians. You find them all over SF. I have one who’s a friend. He makes the worst roomate. As he doesn’t do anything all day, he doesn’t understand why his roomates are tired at night. He just accuses them of being lazy.

I went and read what he wrote, and it makes a lot more sense now. I shouldn’t rush to judge. Bad tatertot.

And Rich, I can’t say for sure, but maybe in Pakistan people put a lot of emphasis of having the right job for your social class. If his parents are educated, perhaps they would be humiliated if he took a “demeaning” job? And it sounds like people are far more bound to their parents wishes there than they are here. Who knows? I think this is a good opportunity for us to learn about a different culture…maybe Zeeshan will tell us more.

Ladies and Gentlemen, we have a troll!

I’m afraid the mods don’t take well to spam, no matter how hard you try to make it relavent to the topic. Off with ye.

Whoops. UncleBeer’s quicker on the draw than I am.

Actually you have tatertot to thank this time. She’s the one who sounded the spam siren. Let’s all have a nice hand for her, okay?

WooHoo! Do I get a prize? Actually, I’m just practicing my own moderating skills, since I am now the proud Diva in Command of my own site. Which, by the way, I did not advertise on this board, since it’s a commercial site that I profit from.

If ya’ll will excuse me, I’m going to go sit on my throne of self-righteousness for awhile.

::Hands tatertot a giant hand, the better to knock off trolls with.::
Good work.

A prize? Sure. How 'bout a tatertot? Would you like that with or without ketchup?

I don’t neccesarily agree with this. I’m 19, and I go to college. If I didn’t get the modest monthly check I do, then I would need to work full time to pay rent in addition to going to classes. This is how my parents insure I get a good education. (A good education takes time.)

I have held jobs, and I do know responsibility.

Of course, once I’m done with school I’m on my own

Wait! I coulda had $40 in FREE real money, and UncleBeer deleted the info?

It’s one thing if your parents help you out every once in awhile.Just don’t complain and call them cheap when they do!Also…are they paying for school? There are no dorms at your school?I worked full time and went to school part time…on my own…but I was 24.
